I have noticed that most cities and heavily populated areas voted for Gore while many less heavily populated areas voted for Bush.  There are certainly exceptions, but generally this pattern is true.  I wonder if liberals prefer the red areas and if conservatives prefer the blue areas, or is it just a coincidence that they congregate in the areas that they do.  I personally do not like most cities.  I do like the European cities of Zurich and Milan, but in general I would prefer to live in less populated areas.  I am curious to know what everyone else thinks.

As I said, “there are certainly exceptions.”  I think that, most of the time, more heavily populated areas voted for Gore and less heavily populated areas voted for Bush.  What do you think is the explanation for this?  As a conservative, would you prefer to live in a less heavily populated area?  I mentioned before that I like the cities of Zurich and Milan, but I still prefer the less populated areas of Switzerland and Italy in which I have traveled, to those cities.  I consider the canton of Ticino to be one of the best places in the world.

The country is boring, and it smells.  The city is full of crime and is too crowded.  That's why I like The Suburbs™, the best of both worlds!

In the South the Democrats usually do better in dirt poor rural areas than anywhere else... hell look at the 2002 NC Senate election...

Order of preference:

1. Inner city
2. Country, not in town
3. Middle Suburbs
4. Country Town
5. Outer Suburbs
6. Under the sea

Maybe swap 5 and 6 Wink

I can't stand the suburbs.  Waste of space. Give it to me COMPACT.

I would rather die than live in suburbia (of course there's a difference between a suburb and suburbia... working class suburbs are not suburban)

I was thinking of the Tyneside type more than anything else... places like Bootle or St Denis are hell on earth though...

I don't know the Tyneside suburbs. But I wasn't thinking of ghetto extremes either.
I was just thinking of slabs of concrete like the Frankfurt suburbs of Steinbach or Schwalbach, or Frankfurt's own Nordweststadt. Not affluent (unlike most of Frankfurt's Northwestern suburbs), incredibly dull (like most but not all of them), just "get me out of here" style places.
Now, Mörfelden-Walldorf or Raunheim, to the Southwest, also kind of suburban, also poor, have a very different feel. I could live there if I had too. (Except that Raunheim is terribly loud because of all the planes coming in just over your head.)

Sounds like Telford (not the older areas like Dawley or Ironbridge though. I like them. Telford centre is a dump though)

1. Middle Suburbs
2. Inner city
3. Under the sea (so cool!)

Then there's a big gap...

4. Outer Suburbs (yawn)
5. Country Town (big yawn)
6. Country, not in town (extreme yawn)

Am I the only one who prefers mountains, lakes, and forests to slabs of concrete and rundown buildings?  I do like visiting museums and historical sites in cities.  The best thing about New York City is JFK International Airport because it gets you out of that city and takes you to better places, like the Alps.

No, not at all, but I couldn't live in those mountains, lakes, and forests.

That's why I love Buffalo. Great city, but so close to the wilderness.

Not all suburbs are suburbia, places like Camden and East St. Louis most certainly aren't. And I'd rather live in them than actual suburbia too.

but my ranking:

1. Inner city
2. Country Town
3. Middle Suburbs
4. Country, not in town
5. Under the sea
6. Outer Suburbs

where I live currently doesn't really fit into any of those categories though. Unsure
