At the time, LBJ. Because I didn't have the benefit of hindsight.

With hindsight, Nixon. definately.

Did you ever read about LBJ having a  political opponent knocked off in Texas? Disturbing.

I just can't imagine BRTD, a socialist Dem, supporting Nixon. Even if he dislikes LBJ, I just can't see him doing it. He'd probably be the ONLY socialist in America to support Nixon.

Off topic sort of...BRTD, who would you have supported as the Dem nominee in 1968? McCarthy or RFK?

Yes I know all about him but I probably wouldn't at the time. With all the knowledge of him, I would've definately voted Nixon, or for Hass or DeBerry.

Not many knew about it. Just wondering if you had heard that story. How about the meeting in Texas 3 days before the parade?

Spiro Agnew would not have been his running mate. He hadn't even been elected Governor of Maryland in until 1966.

I think that had Nixon ran in 1964, his running mate would have been House Minority Leader Gerald Ford. They would do much better then Goldwater, however they still would have lost.

Nixon was also a big time red baiter, so I would've voted for him very reluctantly if I did, and like I said, I might've went with Hass or DeBerry.

RFK.

JFK's two biggest mistakes:

1-appointing McNamara
2-selecting LBJ

had he went with someone other than LBJ he would've lived.

If he didn't select LBJ, he wouldn't have won Texas and would have lost the election. Then again...I wouldn't mind! Smiley

Even without Texas, Kennedy still wins by 279 Electoral Votes to 243 Electoral Votes.

BRTD, What was so bad about McNamara? I don't know much about the guy but fron what I do know he doesn't seem that bad.

Rule number 1 when President:
Don't go to a city where 3 future Presidents are chilling for no appearant reason.
George HW Bush: I'm the one adult in America who can't remember where I was when JFK was shot....
Nixon: I found out about JFK's assassination right when I got off the plane.... from Dallas, TX

Ooops.

In 1964 Wallace did run for President in the Deep South States, but never won a primary, even in Alabama.

In 1964 he would nopt have run for President because he was just inaugurated Governor of Alabama in 1963.

Agnew would not have been the VP choice in 1964, considering he took the office of Governor of Maryland in 1967.

I understand taht. I would have chosen a better running mate for Nixon, perhaps Pennsylvania Senator Richard Schreiker or Governor James A. Rhodes of Ohio.

In one precinct in Texas in the '48 senate election, everyone voted for Johnson except one person - and he was the last to vote. What's more, everyone (except the one person who voted against him) voted in alphabetical order. Johnson won that election by 87 votes.

I sort-of like Nixon the man, but his politics stunk. He was just another incarnation of the east coast Rockefeller Republican establishment.

But he could pump out some mean political ads. The 1968 street crime ads are striking even today.
