Music plucked from lastfm account... leaving all the totally obscure stuff out (which had the effect off ridding this of skapunk. Not entirely of course. And thus also of making it more countryesque than it might have been)... and some stuff that ain't bad but that that thing plays to often (Pandora is much better at understanding what you want. But on Pandora you can have multiple stations. So the last.fm account mixes styles straight thru, the Pandora stations don't.) The list was done by going through the entire list, writing down acts until I got to 32, then going back up the list finding first round opponents - fudging it a couple of times because I was pitting too similar stuff against each other. And then fudging it some more when I came up a few people short that way, just adding anything left out at the start from the top down. And then randomizing the order the 32 matchups are listed here (and also ordering the acts in every matchup alphabetically. Basically I'm covering my tracks. Grin ). Oh, and obviously some people were left on for variety. Still, this includes nothing I don't listen to so if you think you have reason to complain about the absence of some favorite act, the fault is probably yours for having no taste in music.

Mighty Mighty Bosstones vs Tom Waits (why would you pit these two?)
Because I  pitted essentially randomly with some damage control. (Such as avoiding the random Hank Williams vs Jimmie Rodgers matchup.)

Dropkick Murphys vs Kris Kristofferson 4-3

Beck vs Carter Family 6-2

Old Crow Medicine Show vs Rancid 0-5

Phil Ochs vs Reel Big Fish 5-3

Mighty Mighty Bosstones vs Tom Waits 2-5

Cop Shoot Cop vs Joe Ely 1.1-1 (Note: Ties to be broken by eliminating the one I voted for myself.)

Justin Townes Earle vs Peter Tosh 0-5

Steve Goodman vs Mudhoney 1-5

Neko Case vs Ton Steine Scherben 4-1

Corb Lund Band vs John Prine 1-0 (Lol again. But this was purely an alt country matchup after all)

Lee Scratch Perry vs Sonic Youth 0-8

Lightnin' Hopkins vs Doc Watson 2-1

Johnny Cash vs Todd Snider 7-0

Suburban Legends vs Townes Van Zandt 0-1 (lol.)

Del McCoury Band vs Pavement 0-8

The Clash vs Jimmie Rodgers 8-0

Pixies vs Lucinda Williams 5-1

Howlin' Wolf vs Loretta Lynn 5-0

Beck vs Dropkick Murphys

NoFX vs Rancid  (the NOFX/Rancid Split album kicks ass link)

Mary Gauthier vs Phil Ochs

Cop Shoot Cop vs Tom Waits

Mudhoney vs Peter Tosh

Neko Case vs Corb Lund Band

Lightnin' Hopkins vs Sonic Youth

Johnny Cash vs Townes Van Zandt

OMC vs Pavement

Social Distortion vs Uncle Tupelo

The Clash vs Pixies (again, not fair!)

Howlin Wolf vs Nirvana (this one sucks too)

Guy Clark vs Woody Guthrie

The Pogues vs Son Volt

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds vs Steve Earle

Robert Johnson vs Bob Marley and the Wailers (BAH!)

Some painfully hard matchups in there.  I sat here for 5 minutes trying to pick between Bob and Robert.  Great list though (if a bit weird).

Something is wrong about that graph... oh wait, it's not the people on this list. I wonder who the "unknowns" are.

Part of the reason is that if you tell last.fm to play music similar to x, x being a Deutschpunk band or a Hamburger Schule band, they don't play you similar sounding music irrespective of language/origin, they play you whatever little German-speaking punk they have... and the spectrum of styles in German-speaking punk is any bit as wide as in English-speaking (German punk has always been predominantly German speaking. Must be that DIY ethos. Wherever you'd go for amateur bands in Germany, bands more oriented towards more mass compatible indie/alternative stuff would be singing in bad English, punk bands usually in German. Skapunk bands usually in English, though.) And they mostly don't even have the better stuff at all. And with the Hamburger Schule bands, it's even worse, as they'll range well into bad German-speaking pop, as long as it has guitars. I tried these things out long before I finally created the account.
