I suspect this is one of those small movements that will ultimately go nowhere (but the media nevertheless thought it was an interesting story so they wrote about it), but I wanted to see if anyone else had heard anything about this.

There's been discussion on the Canadian federal polling division files thread.

Bah. Dumb idea, status-quo will prevail since nobody really wants to go through the whole stuff changing a name entails.

Though the concern about the 'New' is certainly not stupid.

I'm going to the convention. I'm leaning towards supporting the name change, because of all the publicity it will give us.

Are there any proposed names besides just dropping the "New"?

Well, not yet. It needs 2/3 support to amend the party's name, and if that passes, I think the powers that be will put it up to the membership at large to vote on, and will include other names as well. I've heard the following possibilities:

*Democratic Party
*Social Democratic Party
*Progressive Party

'NDP' is a nice acronym, even if the name is kind of meaningless at this point (what was the old Democratic Party anyway?). Farmer-Labour Party would be a cool name; Democratic or Social Democratic are kind of boring.

Why not go back to Cooperative Commonwealth Foundation? I'd support that!

SDP would be good, if not better than NDP. More fitting and more telling than a name like NDP which can apply to any type of party, from fascist to Trot.

Progressive? No. There can only be one Progressive Party, the rural 1920s Progressives.

Well, they could change the name to the New Progressive Party. Tongue

Mmm. I don't mind "Democratic Party", but only if there would be a way to differentiate it from the US one. As for "Progressive Party", wouldn't there be a possibility that an NDP voter who's unaware of the name change not know that it's his or her party and not vote for the candidate?

Do far-right/nationalist parties have claim to using "Canada" in their name like they do to using "America" in the United States?

Nobody cares about that here and nationalist parties are about leaving the Canada.

Actually, both the Liberals and Conservatives have the word "Canada" in their official name, as do the Greens; among major parties, only the NDP and the Bloc don't.

I'm a little puzzled by the claims that there are no nationalist or far-right parties in Canada - perhaps nothing quite in the neo-Nazi sense, but surely Christian Heritage and the Western Block Party are far right. The Canadian Action Party, meanwhile, is as nationalist as they come, even if it's a little hard to tell whether they're far right or far left.

There are no far right parties in the European definition. The CHP isn't that bad, they are just like Republicans in the U.S. The WBP may be a better example, but it's still a stretch. The CAP are economic nationalists, so they are far left.

What about Democratic Progressive Party (DPP - also the name of a Taiwanese Party)

I think the added joke was that the New Progressive Party is the pro-statehood party in Puerto Rico, thus implying that a Canadian party by the same name would advocate annexation by the US. Or maybe I was reading too much into it.

I don't have an objection to "New Democratic Party" as a name. Political party names are rarely descriptive of their philosophies or natures, anyway. Certainly it isn't true almost anywhere outside of Europe. I know Canadians secretly want to be Europeans, but... Tongue

If they have to change the name, become the Social Democrats. Any other name change would be overtly cynical.

Is the word "socialist" or even "social" sort of tainted like it is in America?

Socialist is somewhat tainted, but not as bad as in the U.S. It's probably tainted like the word liberal is down there.

Socialist is really pushing it. Social Democratic is probably the limit.

The name would probably just be "Democratic Party" (no "of Canada")

DPC forms a pretty nice acronym though. Plus you could still be "Dippers" Wink
