It's a quaint homage to Britain's history and tradition.  Keep it.

Frankly, monarchy is antiquated and belongs in the history books. And that applies in all cases, I feel.

God save the queen
She ain't no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming

Should be replaced by an executive presidency.

I would prefer a country largely run by Parliament with a President overseeing the execution of acts and edicts. Much like the Swiss system.

"The Queen is one saved woman.. no, it should go

Oh God attack the queen

to bite her bum"

That is what an executive presidency is, and basically how the US was supposed to function. A lot of people seem to assume Presidentialism requires the President to play an important policymaking role, but all it requires is that the executive branch be independent from the legislative. Of course, I support legislative supremacy over executive.

Modern society has evolved far past the usefulness of a monarchy...that being said, the royals hold no real power, and as long as their country is fine with letting them spend egregious amounts of money, I see no problem.

Personally I'll take The Federal Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland over The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland any day.  Personally the system I've got in mind involves an executive president, though not so much in the mould of the American system but actually something closer to the French system, albeit modified a bit to suit British tastes.  The monarchy has outstayed its welcome in my view.

That sounds good to me.

I've always thought that if we do end up as a republic, a federal system would be the way to go.  In fact it wouldn't be that much different to devolution, just only with a more powerful Welsh Assembly and there being a separate English parliament.  Though, if there is a successful attempt to abolish the monarchy, I think that we at the very least ought to let the Queen sit out the rest of her reign, if only for the comedy value that the Duke of Edinburgh provides.  Tongue
