fab and Kalwejt, you begin with the big names. Sócrates and Durão Barroso aren't the best but there give worse like them.

I vote for António de Spínola

He was the first, provisional President after the Revolution. Spínola was not a part oft the group witch made the Carnation Revolution, but he was very famous and popular in the military. He resigns after his right-wing ideas have no majority in the MFA (Movimento das Forças Armadas) and then he want to make a right-wing coup attempt in March 1975.

You're right, but Kalwejt attacking frontly, I was forced to vote for Socrates. Otherwise, I would have voted for Spinola.
If this survivor isn't "popular", maybe I'll change my vote ! Wink

I don't expect that this survivor will be very "popular". Portugal isn't a big country and sometimes i think many don't know that Portugal is a country, they think this is something to eat Sad Cheesy

It's a tie.

For Sócrates, Barroso and Spínola one vote.

We need more votes or one must change his decision.

António de Spínola is out

[

The result of round 1 was:
Spínola 5
Sócrates 2
Barroso 1

Start of Round 2:

I vote for:
Vasco Gonçalves

He was a General and very left-leaning. His politics polarized Portugal. I don't think that the chance was very big that Portugal going to be Communist, but he fortify the fear that this happend.

@Lewis

The UNITA was founded in 1966 and make a secret agreement with Portuguese Government 1970 against the MPLA. The UNITA was in this time only a pawn of Portugal and later of the USA.

The politics of da Costa Gomes with Angola was not the best, but without him come the same trouble. In Portugal he wasn't so bad. His politics was against all extremists and maybe he was the best of the not democratic elected PM or Presidents after the 25. April

Yes. Or more precisely, they made an agreement with the then portuguese commander in Angola in 1970, Costa Gomes. (No doubt with the central government's agreement etc, that wasn't the point.)

Alright, which non-Communist early PM or President should I change my vote to in order to remain contrarian? Grin

Oh, this i forget Sad You are right, he was the man who make this agreement. I know it and forget it. I think I'm getting old Wink

Vasco Gonçalves is out.

The result of round 2 was:
Vasco Gonçalves  4
Francisco da Costa Gomes 1

Start of round 3:

I vote for Adelino da Palma Carlos

He was the wrong man on the wrong place. He want to bring all together, communists, socialists, centrists and conservatives. This was only a illusion.

Francisco da Costa Gomes is out

[

The result of Round 3 is:

Costa Gomes   3
Pinheiro de Azevedo   2
da Palma Carlos   1

It was a very close race, but the 2. President is out.

Start of Round 4:

Azevedo or da Palma Carlos? Both are worth to eliminate.

I vote for Adelino da Palma Carlos
He was only a few month in power and after he resign he never had to do with politics. He knows that was not his world.

After a low turnout:
Alfredo Jorge Nobre da Costa is out

[

The result of round 4 was:

Nobre da Costa   2
Pinheiro de Azevedo   1
da Palma Carlos   1

I don't vote for him, but it was good to eliminate him. He wasn't a elected PM (President Eanes call him) and he changes nothing.

Start of round 5:

I think i must change my tactic  Wink.

I vote for Pedro Santana Lopes.

His time as PM was terrible. He make all wrong what he can do. In the end the half of his Party PSD) don't want to do something with him (Cavaco Silva too)

Pedro Santana Lopes is out

[

The result of Round 5

Pedro Santana Lopes 3
Pinheiro de Azevedo 2

Start of Round 6

I vote for Pinheiro de Azevedo

I vote for him, because I get no majority to eliminate  the "naive idealist" da Palma Carlos. By the way, i don't understand that conservative want him out. Da Palma Carlos was more left-leaning Wink

Pinheiro de Azevedo is out

[

The first who eliminate without a dissentient vote.

The Result of Round 6

Pinheiro de Azevedo 6

Start of Round 7

I think this round will be more exciting Wink

I vote for José Manuel Durão Barroso

He was the "poodle" of G. W. Bush (Iraq), an average PM and is a bad President of  the European Commission

I agree with everything Hans said about Durrao Barroso, but I'm not sure he needs to go quite yet.

Say da Palma Carlos and he isn't out. Anyway, in the moment is a tie.

da Palma Carlos is out

The result of Round 7(It was a very low turnout):

All "revolutionary" PM and Presidents are eliminated

da Palma Carlos   2
Durão Barroso   1

Start of Round 8

I vote now for Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo.

I like her and she wasn't a bad woman, but she don't have big influence in the Portuguese politics. She was only a few months interim-PM and 1983 independent Candidate for president. She got only 7% and place 4.

A 4-way tie. Every day there is something new Smiley

We have in the moment one vote for:

Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo
Pinto Balsemão
José Manuel Durão Barroso
José Sócrates

We need more votes to break the tie.

@ fab

Pinto Balsemão is a good choice too. He was not the best PM and I think as PM a little bit overstrained . On the other hand he was a very important man in the PSD (in the grand coalition time)

Result of Round 8

Pinto Balsemão  3

José Manuel Durão Barroso   1

Start of Round 9

I vote for José Manuel Durão Barroso

It would be a shame when Sócrates will eliminated before this man
