It's notable how many women are against the law.

People are stupid and, generally, dupes for whatever the religious authorities in their homelands tell them, even if it would be beneficial for them.

If the majority of women in Mali want to be submissive to their husbands in their marriage then they can do that of their own choosing, but they shouldn't force women who don't want to be to do so.

Why does this argument strike me as familiar?

"It's a tiny minority of women here that wants this new law - the intellectuals. The poor and illiterate women of this country - the real Muslims - are against it," she added.

Indeed.

I suspect that all this actually shows - like with Islamic fundamentalism in general - is the strong anti-modernism (or rather "modern" as "western") of alot of the people there. Which isn't particularly surprising once you consider those places history.

A fine example of a crusade against intellectualism.

My advice: get out.

Wow, that's a poorly designed graphic.

Indeed. What does anything represent?

Very roughly speaking the arc swept by each sector is proportional to the % of women in the country that believe it's OK to be abused.  Thus Iraq at 59% is roughly twice as wide as Haiti at 29%, which is roughly twice as wide as Honduras at 15.5%.  So instead of a pie chart basd n 100%, it's one based on 731.8%, which isn't pie shaped and has some funky graphics to further confuse the issue in misleading ways.

Also, Serbia's slice looks just as wide as Belize & Kazakhstan's slices do, even though the percentage in Serbia is about half of what it is in the other two countries.

That graph shows how evil Muslim brainwashing is.

Most of this has only a slight relationship to Islam.

I'm sure none of those cultures thought that before Islam was introduced

or does Christianity have a civilizing effect on the savages?

Quite frequently it does. See Imperial China. After missionaries started spreading Christianity in the 19th century, it was the Christians that rose against and tried to stamp out things like foot-binding, concubinage, polygamy and slavery. Or see Sati in India. It wasn't the Christians practicing that. Or barbaric human sacrifices practiced by European pagans that went away after conversion to Christianity.

And in the same way, Islam tried to stamp out female infanticide and the caste system.

What's wrong with these?

Anyway it is funny how both sides share the same point about the intelligence of their supporters.
