There really isn't any "real world" politics where I live right now...but I have done it before and though it can be rewarding being a Student Party Official, its very easy to make gaffes.

afleitch is usually pretty above-board on the Forum; rarely does he get emotional.

The dude just said Lockerbie bomber decision was correct.... That's not a proper public political statement. The good thing is that I think as a community we would never try to use statements here against someone's actual career. Including that asswipe Phil.

I find it funny that not only somebody found this forum but that they also would use it to attack their opponents.

If I ran for office, I wouldn't care. But then again, I'm not Phil Wink

They may have requested that he not post on any political forum during his involvement with whatever campaign or organization he's working for. That happens all the time.

Posts on any website can become political fodder. This can be especially so if the poster was adopting an unusual persona. More frequently, a poster uses the apparent anonymity of the web to take more strident positions than they would in a face-to-face meeting.

What I see most frequently are individual statements that reflect a different set of views from a particular time in one's life. This happens just as much in the other forms of communication, and politicians have to defend these past actions or statements (think "I never inhaled.") I try to be prepared to defend my actions in front of any group should they be called up in a totally unrelated group. Over 50 years this happened more than once already, though interestingly so far not between the Atlas and local politics.

The best policy is to treat the web as any other encounter with other people. So, use the same type of language and same ideas that you would in those encounters, and you should be fine in any future endeavor. That includes politics, business, or personal affairs. I hope those from the forum who have met me in person would agree that I'm the same person online as offline.

I can't wait until we have a president that used to post on the internet as a kid.  The archives will be epic.

Quick... I better save and file his stuff now so I can use it in the future.  I may not be joking here...

Oh wait.  He could have ammunition on me.  I think in 10 years, posts on here will be irrelevant because there will always be some candidate who gaffes something on Twitter, etc.

I can't find the "whatever happened to Keystone Phil?" thread, but I mentioned this a few days ago. He said local party people were reading his posts here.

This times 10.  The Internet isn't anonymous.  A lot of people assume it is.

Posts on any website can become political fodder.

IIRC, the posts of congressional candidate Anne Sumers (D, NJ-05) became an issue in 2002 when she tried passing herself off as a moderate Republican-turned-Democrat; her posts on "Liberal Oasis" showed her to be much further in the deep end of the Dem party for her moderate Republican district's comfort.

So if I have political ambitions, I'm f**cked, in other words...    Tongue

Even Phil isn't exactly Mike Assad, who probably did the right thing leaving the forum after all the sh!t he was up to at times, and then being elected a member of his local School Board.
