While "progressive" has lately become one of the most degraded words in the political lexicon, the term did once have a meaning and a certain logic to it - a belief in progress, a belief that "progress" meant, in part, improved living standards for the bulk of the population and a belief in positive liberties and positive rights.

Winston and his like strike me as the kind of people who would lie across a wet and muddy road so a rich could safely cross from one side walk to the other without ruining his shoes.
