It depends, though being a thrift store maven was an extremely good sign about a person during the 80s and 90s.  However since the very late 1990s the cachet has been lost by its near universalization, as is often the process.  Of course, just having the good sense to go to thrift stores for your attire doesn't mean the same as being a 'hipster'.  If that were the case my mother would be a hipster.

I heard a great story at Dude Fest from a guy in one of the bands. Even though I was trying to avoid discussing the internet, I did have to compliment him on his hilarious definition of "hipster", basically one what group of kids in a subculture call another group of kids in a subculture accross the street who are dressed the same and unaware. He said that was a reference to a show they played in Austin, Texas. Outside of the venue the kids congregated noticed another group across the street at another show. One mentioned "Look at those fucking hipsters." and everyone started laughing.

Both groups of kids were dressed almost exactly the same.

I have yet to meet a hipster guy who I didn't think was at least somewhat douchey.  About half the hipster women I see are the same... the other half are dead fucking sexy.

If you were really rich you could befriend the poor without hazard, AHDuke.  But alas you are a social climber, and must look for use in others, just like a poor.   Climb hard now!
