Who would want to look poor, though? It's almost as absurd as people who want to be friends with poor people. What benefit does that have? (A question I posed last night at a party).

If you were really rich you could befriend the poor without hazard, AHDuke.  But alas you are a social climber, and must look for use in others, just like a poor.   Climb hard now!

You know the parallels between you and I are startling - I used to behave like exactly that kind of ass at parties in the 1980s.  Basically I was the James Spader character in Pretty in Pink:

I'm not sure if I know any hipsters. How would I tell if someone is a hipster?

I guess people on here would consider me a hipster.

No. It's almost impossible to be a hipster in high school.
I dress like stereotypical hipster, listen to music like a stereotypical hipster etc.

I don't know I don't consider myself a hipster but I could see how people would consider me one.
Unless you guzzle Pabst and waste a ton of money trying to look poor, you're not a hipster. You are a hipster Padawan learner.

You don't think there is more to enjoy or not about a person above and beyond the content of their financial statements (or in your case, your parents' financial statements)?

In any event, how I choose with whom I associate as friends or acquaintances has only a very weak correlation with the state of their finances.

And here I was ragging on NYU tools.  Duke you sound like a Carter Pewterschmidt parody here. Most "poors" are self aware enough to not view people as commodities. If you are serious it appears that you and your squash partners havent made that leap.

Narrow, tight jeans, thick black framed glasses with big eye-holes.  Also I don't think they even wear converse anymore.

I could say 'hey I know about them even though I live overseas, but they're thick on the ground here in Thailand'.. though like everything here it is just immatative,

Ah, I'm pretty sure I've never met anybody like that. Thank you, though.

Yup, unfortunatley Modest Mouse's singles have penetrated into the bro community. There were plenty of them there too.

When I was in high school Modest Mouse was the band that only the quirky "underground" kids listened to. Seriously. In fact a running joke on a forum I posted at was that listening to Modest Mouse made you a mainstream trend follower due to the fact that they were the biggest trend on the board among the underground, yet it was an ironic since no one mainstream had a clue who they were. Now those were the days.

Hipsters, and anyone who exclusively defines themselves by a subculture, can often be really annoying.  I don't think there are that many actual hipsters, though.  But neighborhoods with a lot of hipster-friendly stuff tend to be very attractive to me.

But I like my jeans normal and my Sonic Youth non-SYR.
