I can't recall the last time a popular incumbent Governor lost his own state in a Presidential election.

Adlai Stevenson lost Illinois in both 1952 and 1956. It was largely because he ran a poor campaign, and Eisenhower was seen as a war hero.

Gilmore was neither an incumbent governor nor popular in 2008...

And he ran against a very popular former Governor.

And besides Weld for Senate, whom else is there?

Maggie Hassan won thanks to Hillary coattails

Jerry Brown actually wasn't popular and was running against MH Stinky Pete AND St. Ronnie during his go-ahead, and he was out of office for some time when he tried his hand against Bill in '92.

Don't know of others.

Probably just because the opponent was even more popular.
