While Obama, who makes a speech about responsibility, staying in school, doing your homework and is called a socialist indoctrinator, Reagan gave to schoolchildren essentially a stump speech about low-taxes, smaller government, line item vetoes and how great "Negro" institutions are, and he's the greatest, most freedom-loving president.

Ridiculous.

eh, the way he said it wasn't THAT bad, more of a sign of the general racism of the era [and every era].  I just recently watched an 80's documentary on Central Asia and the narrator talked about the big noses of the locals and how they just loved to burst out in song and dance, hah.

I do love the African-American kid around 2:00 who looks like he's falling asleep five seconds before Reagan busts out the Negro educational institutions remark.

I don't really see what is so harmful of that last part. Doesn't "Negro" mean "black" in Spanish? If "Negro" has such an awful connotation why is it that some institutions like the NAACP use the word as part of the organization name? Or am I just a naive Okieboy who has never been around racists? I've been around plenty of racist people and never once have they used the word "negro", it has always been the big nasty N-word.
The rest of that however sounds like propaganda.

Umm... "negro" is not used in the acronym NAACP.

Most of those organizations were founded prior to the civil rights movement, when the word negro fell out of favor. Though Reagan was an old, so I suppose I can excuse him that part. The rest of the speech is still undeniably political though.

What's wrong with the word Negro?  Sure, it may not be the word commonly used now-a-days, but Reagan was an old dude.

Ronald Reagan was a piece of garbage but the whole "negro" thing is kind of charming in a highly racist sort of way. I mean he was a white American born (literally) in 1911, after all.

I still dont understand why the pc police say we can't say negroe or colored.  the negroe college fund and the naaccp have them in it but some how its racist for white people to say it.
LOL they can even call each other nigg.... in their trashy rap songs but we cant?  Makes no sense.  I myself do not like the N word but I refuse to accept the pc gospel on negroe, colored, black, or other terms commonly used.  There is a black boy where I work who is the nicest guy and is freindly to every one.  He calls me a cracker and we just laugh about it.  I have no problem with it.  I call him a lawn jockey once in awhile and he whoops it up.   doesnt mind a bit.  But then he doesn't go in for pc like most of those people.

WE NEED TO STOP TAKING THINGS SO SERIOUS AND JUST RELAX.

To all the people who are getting hung up on the Negro thing, even ignoring that, the speech is still not something the President should be saying to schoolchildren.

I will agree. Schools should be free from indoctrination.

I'm sure hardcore Libertarian Glenn Beck is going to condemn Reagan's indoctrination speech any minute now.

Public schools are entirely indoctrination. My children will never attend.

How would a school not constitute indoctrination to you?

While private schools aren't much better, at least they provide a better education and pay attention to the concerns of parents and students. I am done with the public school system.

There are good public school systems out there though.  Not all of them suffer from the major problems often associated with public schools...but they all suffer from the minor problems that public schools can't avoid.  (like dumb kids, bad kids and "special" kids)

How about extremely incompetent staff that refuses to work with students/parents because they are "overworked and underpaid" yet they are eligible for the most bullsh**t government program ever created (3 at 50).
