An interesting question is to think about Canada's new Parliament if it was elected with a two-round system (that is, a runoff between the top 2 candidates given that no one breaks 50% in the first round) or, more fun, IRV.

For reference, if anybody ever gets to this, or if I get to this, I found a breakdown of party preferences here. And I think EKOS publishes them once in a blue moon.

I was making a nice list of all the ridings in which the winners didn't break 50% in 2008, but this fucking piece of sh**t ate it up. So, the map of results is here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canadavotes/map/2008/ Use it. Or Pundits Guide (http://www.punditsguide.ca/parties_e.php)

I'm hopeless working with numbers (which is what a IRV simulation entails), so I'll rather simulate these with a runoff - which is quite different...

I was thinking of doing it with the UK, but it took too long. Suffice it to say that the LibDems would do much better. I think the same happens with the Liberals. Bloc definitely gets badly hurt.

Errors are to be expected.

I'm doing some spreadsheet work with Canadian ridings at the moment, but with those preference flows figures, I'll take a bit of a look at allocating preferences... I'm pretty sure that once I've finished doing what I'm doing, it won't take much longer to then set up a preferences worksheet that can calculate a 2PP for the different ridings... Very interested in pursuing this, but it's going to take me a week or so to get involved.

I did this a while ago, maybe I'll take a stab at it.

I'll list the ridings I think would change hands.

Here's Atlantic Canada...

South Shore-St. Margaret's: Conservative to NDP
West Nova: Conservative to Liberal
