I did my Civic Service. Those were the days when they still drafted almost everybody.

yeah, when I lived in Salzburg, my roommate was one of the very few that actually did military service rather than doing civil service.

His family also flew the Austrian flag at their house.  He got made fun of a lot for that.

considering that the military is disproportionately young, black, and brown, and the army even more so than the other services, I'm guessing it has quite a few Democrats.
Your ignorance (and bias) is showing.  In 2004 61.9% of the population of 15-24 year olds was white.  Army recruits from the same year were 64.3% white.  cite  The military does take in a lot of middle class black kids.  They tend to be a bit smarter than average too, yet another fact that will blow your mind.link

Of course these numbers have gone down a bit over the last decade because of Bush the Lesser and Rummy.

Few ?

There are 45.000 Austrian men each year that are drafted. About 5000 of them are untauglich (ineligible) for military service, leaving about 40.000 to choose between military and civil service. Currently the split is about 50/50 between military and civil service.

Many just prefer the 6 months in the military, rather than the 9 months in the civil service.

I'm just talking of the people I knew.  He was the only one out of maybe 25 or so that actually did military service.

Somebody told me about this via facebook. I'm probably the best person to give Rob advice.  I am in artillery though it's been almost two years since I've been near a paladin and almost 5 years since I was with an artillery unit. I won't even get into Fort Sill!

I thought you were like 40.  I guess I was horribly mistaken.

FYI - We'll let you enlist up until your 42nd birthday.

I've considered joining up for the money, but then I realized that I am far too physically weak. I can't do 35 push-ups, & I don't think I will ever be able to.

I don't know your age but if you are under 21, get up to 42 push-ups in 2 minutes and you'll pass. Trust me, I could only do like 20 when I first got in but now I max them (80 push-ups).

the uniforms are great! Cheesy and you will be in great shape, so picking up the ladies will be very easy.

I prefer the desert unifrom.  With the current uniform, the Velcro never sticks and the crotch rips out.  However, the women do fall all over me when I'm in uniform, especially being not being near a military base (for my job).

I did my basic at Ft. Jackson in the summer, fun....

That's almost as bad as Fort Sill.  I was there for the month of June for recruiting training and the humidity sucks.  Fort Sill isn't as humid as Jackson but by May, it can get up to 105 or 110 at Sill.

Anyhow Rob - if you want the lowdown on being a 13B, feel free to PM me.  My advice to you right now is work on PT and do your future Soldier tasks and you'll be fine.  I'm actually in recruiting so I know some of the pains you might be going through. Wink + Tongue

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Smiley It's appreciated.

No. The contract states that I will receive no pay until I report for active duty...

I thought you were like 40.  I guess I was horribly mistaken.

I'm 21 Smiley

Whoa. I never would have guessed. Tongue It must be so exciting and all. I know I'd be jazzed. Tongue Grin

I am excited, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't scared, too. Tongue

.... what the hell? Is Ebowed going to join next?

Ebowed is not a fan of this decision. Tongue

That's completely normal. In fact, I think there would be cause for concern if you weren't a little nervous. Tongue

Ben and George -  thanks!  Life is very busy and I'll be a hit and miss around here.  Being a recruiting commander is very hectic.

Lucky for me, recruiting out of West Virginia isn't that dangerous -- yet!
