Are you for a federal Europe?

Of course, everyone may have his model of federation, but let's say something more or less like the US or Germany, an actual federal state, with some actual power to the federal government.

So?

Not really. It seems that such a federation would never be democratic.

That will be a terrible day for Britain. Then again, a man burned down his own house, so that his neighbours house would burn along with it, so it's not a strange sentiment.

No it wouldn't. It would be the day we finally get our country back.

Nah, not really. Why do we need an EU for free trade?

Nor the one envisaged by the Lisbon treaty.

Correct (I still voted a very recultant yes mind; mostly due to localist concerns and I didn't think my vote would make a cents worth of difference anyway).

It's not my place to judge on this matter. Let the Europeans decide, I say. If they want integration, let them have it. If they want seperatism, let them have it.

When DeGaulle vetoed British entry into EEC or whatever it was, I can't help but think that he was trying to do us a favour there...

Not really, no. I'm quite sceptical of the EU in its present form, and I doubt that an acceptable federal state could be created easily.

I reserve the right to be proven wrong at some future point though.

Certainly not. The EU is becoming increasingly less attractive and I think we would be better off without it. The good kind of integration provided by the EU we need on a global level anyway.

And in general we need instutitional competition, i.e. allowing countries to pursue different solutions in order to find the best systems rather than top-down streamlining and centralization.

So what? Continue divided Europe?
