Horrible Person.

He was an elected official in Alabama. That means he was a member of the Alabama Democratic Party, with its slogan, "White Supremacy—For the Right".

I received an A last year for pointing this out.

A liberal fantasy. I don't really understand the intellectual fawning over that book.

That, and what Xahar said.

Yeah, because Finch was the epitome of a white supremacist. Roll Eyes

What a lazy teacher you must have had, if that anecdote is even true.

He was a Democrat. Thus, he associated with white supremacists.

Oh dear.  Evidently you don't really know much about the novel, or indeed about party identity in the Deep South in that period, or even the logical fallacy you just made.  I'm surprised at you.

Yea, that's a pretty weak logical argument Xahar. And if you legitimately feel that way you missed the point of the book.

So I guess you missed the whole part with the trial, which was kind of, you know, the main point of the book. Also, it's not like the Democratic Party was totally homogeneous in the the South even then.

Clearly, you've never heard of this Southern Democrat:

Oh yeah, and Harper Lee, who was best friends with Truman Capote, is totally the kind of person that would create a bigoted protagonist.

Must've been too long since I read the book: I remember it as being set in Arkansas.  Wow, is my memory bad.

I do remember the hilarious line about Scout having even "met a Republican" at one point as if they were an exotic species.  Which, of course, they were in the South in those days.

Maycomb County, Alabama.  Seems to me like the kind of place that gave FDR, Strom, and George Wallace ~ 85% of the vote each.

Atticus was, for the record, no bigot.  Read the trial scene again, if you think differently.

There's also the scene where, with nobody watching, he tells Scout that he doesn't think less of black people and isn't offended by people calling him a "n-lover."

There was an interesting article on Atticus Finch by Malcolm Gladwell in the Summer in the New Yorker - it can be found here , i think somebody posted it here before, but it provides what is perhaps an interesting contrast to the general sentiments on display in this thread.

I wish I could've gotten an A for saying that there were racist Alabamans during the 1920's.

Well, he is a fictional character. Christ, man. It's a good story. Just enjoy it for what it is.

You can get an A for anything if you use enough words.

I don't deny it's a good story, but just that his character did grate on me a great deal. Though then again it might just have been the narrator.

Obviously would be a Tea Party Republican to-day after the breaking of the Democratic hegemony in the South (thanks to Republican-supported civil rights legislation) allowed genuine opponents of racism to join the GOP. Certainly, he'd be loudly denouncing Dixiecrats Hillbilly Clinton and Barackkk Obama who are determined to subjugate blacks in yet another form of slavery. /Oldiesfreak/
