In short, Cuomo and (to a lesser extent) Giuliani look good. Paterson and Lazio are regarded as joke candidates by pretty much everyone.

In other words, NY is not interested in electing known incompetents to run things like certain other states.

Andrew Cuomo-D is the 800lb gorrilla in this race. He runs- He gets the Democratic nomination by a 75-25 percent margin against Paterson-D and defeats Guiliani or Lazio by a 60-40 margin. but he is waiting until Paterson-D drops out of the race voluntarily to avoild a divisive Democratic primary.
David Paterson-D becomes the Democratic nominee by default if Andrew Cuomo decides not to run. Paterson-D will lose to Guiliani-R by a 55-45 percent margin. but narrowly defeat Lazio by a 50-50 margin. Paterson-D is assuming Lazio-R is going to be the GOP nominee.
Rudy Guiliani-R can defeat Paterson-D but cannot defeat Cuomo-D. Losing to Cuomo-D will put a nail in Guiliani's coffin for any future Presidential run.
Rick Lazio-R will be the GOP nominee by Default assuming Rudy is not running.
Paterson-D is looking at Jon Corzine-NJ to see how despite being unpopular can win re-election. Paterson-D can hope a strong Third Party candidate can split the Republican party vote.
