There was reason to fear a 1930s-style beggar-thy-neighbour currency policy when China devalued its currency slightly last December.

Perhaps China and the surrounding region should create an ERM-style system of exchange rates to promote stability in trade within the region. This would greatly help reduce dependence on western consumers.
