Why do people think libertarianism = anarchism?

"Libertarianism is a term adopted by a broad spectrum of political philosophies which advocate the maximization of individual liberty and the minimization or even abolition of the state."

Abolition of the state is something also espoused by anarchists.

Notice the word 'minimisation'. Not all libertarians are anarcho-capitalists you know. In fact, most are minarchists.

There are both minarchistic & anarchistic strands of libertarianism, definitely.

The anarcho-capitalists are... However there are also libertarian socialists like Noam Chomsky who are far from it.

Because not many people want to dig deeper in either philosophy.

Anarcho-Capitalism ≠ Anarchism

Because it rightfully is. A better question is: why do so many American "libertarians" mistake corporatism for a free-market?
