IL 2010 Primaries - Congressional Candidates

  We have now completed the second day of candidate filing for the February 2 primary.

No candidates were added to the Statewide executive office list, but some were added to the Congressional list as follows:

In CD-2 Anthony Williams filed for the Green Party

In CD-7 frequent candidate Robert Dallas filed for the Democratic Primary

In CD-17 Bobby Shilling filed as a Republican to run against Phil Hare

In CD-18 Sheldon Shafer filed for the Green Party

The list will probably grow pretty slowly until next Monday which is the last day of filing.  There is generally a big rush on that day.  Sometimes prospective candidates wait to see who they will run against before pulling the trigger and running themselves.  If you are in line at 5:00 pm, you can still turn in your petition.

  The 3rd day of filing again adds no statewide candidates and only a handful of new congressional ones.

In CD-12 Rodger W. Jennings filed for the Green Party

In CD-13 Scott Harper is trying for a second time as the Democratic opponent to Judy Biggert,

In CD-18 Aaron Schock is running for reelection for the GOP

Again Muon2 will add these to his list, but on day 4 we picked up a few more Congressional Candidates

CD-2 Isaac C. Hayes filed as a Republican to run agains Jesse Jackson Jr.
         Michael E. Mayden filed for the same position for the Green Party setting up a primary.

CD-5 Matthew Reichel filed to run for the Green Party (I believe that he was the Green's candidate back in the spring when Mike Quigley won the special election.  He actually made a pretty reasonable showing outpolling the GOP candidate in many of the Chicago city precincts.)

CD-7 Kip Robbins filed to run for the Green Party

CD-9 Susanne Atanus filed for the GOP to run against Jan Shakowsky
         Simon Ribiero filed to run in the same race for the Green Party

CD-15 David Gill filed to run as a Democrat against Tim Johnson for what I believe is the third time around.

  As of this morning Danny Davis has filed to run for re-election to his 7th CD seat.  He will also probably file to run for Cook County Board President as well. (A Step up from Congressman here in IL)  He will probably look at the landscape and decide within the week which race he will make.
  My gut is that he will forgo the competitive Board President race and run for reelection in his safe congressional district.  If he does that, then look for the others who filed as Democrats in CD-7 to step aside to let Davis run pretty much unopposed.

  An interesting scenario may be getting set up now in Il-7.  If Danny Davis chooses to run for Cook County Board President and there is a wide open primary, or if he chooses to run for reelection and the many other candidates who have filed do not drop out.
  Chicago 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti has filed to run for the seat setting up the scenario, like Memphis, where a majority African American Congressional District has a white representative due to the primary vote being split between several A-A candidates.
  I'm not trying to play politics with race in saying this, but it is a huge huge factor in Illinois-especially Chicago and Cook County politics.

  This race may turn out to be a pretty interesting barn-burner in the end.

  I would support Muon2's analysis of the Senate race only to add that on the Democratic side Jacob Meister could make things interesting.  Right now he has almost no name ID outside of the LGBT community, but he has deep pockets and seems willing to put his money into the race.  It could make things a bit more interesting.  Cheryle Jackson has the big millstone around her neck that she was press-secretary for Rod Blagojevich.
  The GOP side is indeed Kirk against a bunch of no-names.  The has been interest shown in Hughes by the conservative portion of the state's GOP, but there is no way I seem him not being steam-rollered by Kirk along with the rest of the pack.

  The 'opposition' in the Chicago Congressional races is weak and I see no incumbent losing.  CD-7 may or may not change hands depending on what Danny Davis decides to run for.  Right now my money is on him keeping his safe congressional seat.  Again, if you have several African American candidates in the Democratic primary, it may split the vote enough to allow Bob Fioretti who is white to represent the AA majority 7th.  (Obama got 88% in the district in 2008, so winning the Feb 2 primary is tantamount to being elected.)

  There is the CD-10 free for all, which would should turn out to be an interesting race.

  CD-8 is likely gone for the GOP for another election as Dem Melissa Bean is now established.
 
  I would predict freshmen Halvorsen and Foster get reelected at this venture, but its too early to say for sure.

  I see nothing that would cause any of the downstate Congressmen to lose reelection.

  Danny Davis is announcing this morning that he is indeed keeping his safe house seat and running for reelection in Il-7.  It will be interesting to see what result this has on all the other candidates who filed to run in the Democratic primary.  Should they all drop out, Davis will be a shoo-in for reelection.

  State Rep Anazette Collins has already dropped out of the CD-7 to run for reelcetion in the Il-10 representative district.  Look for most of the other Dems to drop out in short oredr to make clear the path for Danny Davis' reelection

  So is Il-14 a rerun of the Oberweis-Lauzen race from 2 years ago?  You definitely have the pro-Hastert side, and the anti-Hastert more conservative side.  There were some pretty ill feeling after the primary 2 years ago which helped Democraat Bill Foster better secure his victory.  Will this happen a second time?

  Richard B. Mayers got removed from the ballot today as the Green Party candidate in the 10th Congressional District.  (THe Green Party didn't want him on anyway as he is a neo-nazi and they claim does not represent their party)
  In the 14th the objection against Daniel Kairus' petitions to appear as the Green Party candidate was overturned.
