hey guys, I know I should probably post this in the past elections page, but I figured I'd get an answer here quicker. I'm putting together a project that analyzes the racial makeup of each candidate's popular vote in 2008. So basically, out of the 69.5 million votes Obama got, how many of those votes were from whites, blacks, hispanics etc. And the same for McCain.

So do any of yall know of a website that can give me this data?? Thanks in advance

This wouldn't be very difficult to calculate if you just looked at the exit polls.

CNN has comprehensive exit polls on their website still. That should help.

Not sure if anybody had done it yet, but I got bored. Here's what I'm coming up with:

Obama

White - 41,190,911 (59.27%)
Black - 15,987,044 (23.00%)
Latino - 7,805,820 (11.23%)
Asian - 1,605,177 (2.31%)
Other/No Answer - 2,910,476 (4.19%)

Total - 69,499,428

McCain

White - 52,686,049 (87.88%)
Black - 673,139 (1.12%)
Latino - 3,611,648 (6.02%)
Asian - 906,148 (1.51%)
Other/No Answer - 2,073,339 (3.47%)

Total - 59,950,323

Adam, I crunched the numbers too and got very similar results. I think it says a lot about the state of the parties, in the age of Obama, the Democratic party is clearly more "big tent" when it comes to race, while the Republican party is even whiter than I thought.

It should be noted though, that a clear majority of votes for Obama were from white Americans, just not 88%
