Election Results for East St. Louis, Illinois
«
on:
October 29, 2009, 06:35:06 pm »
If I remember correctly, the city voted over 95% for Kerry.
I'm just wondering what percentage Obama got there.
Thanks!

Obama 13,846 votes (99.23%)
McCain 83 votes (0.60%)
Others 23 votes (0.17%)
Also, neat Senate results:
Durbin (D) 95.59%
Cummings (Green) 2.43%
Sauerberg (R) 1.08%
Koppie (Con) 0.48%
Stafford (Lib) 0.43%
Not many places in the country where a Republican Senate candidate can't get half the votes of the Green, methinks.

Isn't East St. Louis over 95% African-American. Although still getting less than 1% is pretty small anywhere, that seems that only plausible explanation.

Yes, the city of East St Louis is almost all African Americans now.
When there is a viable Green candidate, they usually do way better than a Republican in the non-waterfront districts in the center of San Francisco.

Interesting that the 5% who were sick of Blagojevich chose to vote for Topinka and not Whitney.

Thanks a lot everyone!
The city was 97.7% black at the 2000 Census, probably between 98-99% now. It's a very sad place, probably worse than Detroit and Gary in terms of the urban decay.

I noticed that as well, could it be because she was perceived as fairly moderate? Or maybe the Green candidate ran a horrible campaign.

Explain why he won 10% statewide, then.

Topinka was both moderate and very popular as State Treasurer. She was the only GOPer to win statewide in 2002 when the Dems swept the other offices.

Someone might want to check out the voting age population for East St. Louis, and compare it with registered voters.

You're certainly within 10 miles of "that place" if you've ever done anything in the center of St. Louis City

West Memphis and the Westbank of New Orleans are equally crappy. Something about being on the wrong side of the river.
