Roll Eyes Do people actually bother to read substantive posts in these or is the sole purpose just that you can type a name? I fail to see how that is really that fun, interesting, intellectual etc etc.

Basically, I don't really like any of the Tudors (who would having studied them in depth?). I'll vote for Henry VII for the reasons outlined by Thomas More in Book I of Utopia - you can get an old and probably inaccurate translation here.

It would appear that way. Mary I continues to be unfairly maligned.

They were all a bad lot. Also, your Catholic bias is rather obvious.

Part of the problem is that the sort of history taught in schools has a habit of being... aha...

Don't think I'll vote though. Don't any of those left, but they aren't as instantly and utterly offensive as Henry VIII or Queenie.

They were all a bad lot. Also, your Catholic bias is rather obvious.

If my memory is right, he's Jewish and not religious.

Catholic bias? What I related regarding Mary's reformation is all from the original source material and the historiography of the reign - by all means you can go and check my work by reading the relevant manuscripts in the British Library if your mediaeval palaeography is up to the task (I suspect not). If you do fancy the challenge though, go and look up the Harleian Manuscript Collection - MSS 421 is the one you'll be wanting and there are a few others besides that. Alternatively, you can read some of the general historiography on the Reformation (something I doubt you have) - I suggest looking either at Christopher Haigh's English Reformations or either of Eamon Duffy's Stripping of the Altars or Fires of Faith, the latter of which is about Mary's Reformation in particular. You'll find similar points made about the Reformation in all three works. There's also plenty of scholarship on the Pilgrimage of Grace and the 1549 rebellions if you're interested and I'd be happy to suggest where to look. You might also note that if I were really biased in favour of Catholicism, I would probably have argued along the lines of supersoulty, that the Marian persecutions were a response to the Edwardine ones rather than being autochthonous, but I didn't. I make no excuses for the burnings - I am an historian, I study history for what it was, not what I think it should have been and the evidence all seems to suggest that the Marian Restoration was far more successful than is generally given credit for. If you're going to suggest I am biased, I suggest you have more of an evidentiary basis than it being 'rather obvious'.

Al - your memory is correct.

Judging from that wonderful non-sequitur I am guessing you won't be visiting the British Library or reading any of my recommendations. Of course, I would say that given your continued posting in support of the British empire, your claim is probably somewhat erroneous. There's also the first part of your username, although that is up for greater historical debate that I don't know a great deal about; it isn't my forté.

Henry VII: 4
Mary I: 2

Thus, Mary I is a survivor:

Hm, making a narrow-minded political mediocre, Spanish interests puppet a survivor over one of the more effective English rulers, strange...
