Pataki for Senate?
«
on:
November 08, 2009, 04:29:03 am »
I've heard some rumors about a Pataki challenge to Gillibrand. Anyone know if there is anything to this?
I also heard he was thinking about President in 2012 (WTF). He has no chance at the White House, but I am salivating at the thought of picking off that NY Senate seat.

He was originally recruited and then declined to run saying he prefers the private sector.
I think the NRSC is lacking any credible opponent whatsoever, so they asked Pataki just to have his name in the mix so the NRSC can claim to their donors that they're potentially challenging more seats than they are...my same theory as with Hoeven
however that was also my theory with Castle and I ended up with egg on my face

Pataki was
okay
as Governor. I may support him over Gillibrand. Undecided. But I don't think Pataki has it in him to run. Even if he did run, I don't see him having too much of a chance. The state is growing increasingly Democratic as a result of the GOP's alienation of moderates and independents, something that will be detrimental to the GOP's long-term success. What would really be interesting is if the GOP somehow put up Mayor Bloomberg for a state-wide race.

That isn't a well-rooted theory. If you look at the NRSC, they have literally been going all in this cycle. Mark Kirk, Mike Castle, Charlie Crist, Kelly Ayotte, etc. Also, they got rid of Bunning. They've been putting a great deal of effort into netting their high profile candidates. Whether or not Pataki will run remains to be seen, and even then, I'm not sure he could actually win the seat.

Of course the NRSC has had great successes thus far, but that doesn't mean that they don't want to exaggerate their future potential as much as possible.

After the Hoffman incident? Not likely.
The NYC GOP lets Bloomberg run on their ticket when they have no chance anyway since it helps them keep the Democrats out and Bloomberg *happens* to always give their party a lot of money afterwards, kind of funny how that works

It's more likely that he runs for President in 2012:

Quote
Former New York Gov. George Pataki (R) is being urged by major Republican donors and the party apparatus in Washington to run against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D) in 2010. While he has not made a final decision on a Senate run, Pataki has told at least one major GOP donor in private that he is not interested in becoming a senator at the age of 64 and would rather run for president in 2012.

Pataki running for the US Senate is similar to Ronnie Musgrove's failed US Senate run against Roger Wicker- in the race to replace Chester Trent Lott.

Had Pataki decided to run for re-election in 2006 against Elliot Spitzer- He would have lost re-election- Pataki did not recieve more than 50% of the popular vote against any of his Democratic opponents. Mario Cuomo was pretty unpopular in 1994. Vallone-1998 and McCall-2002- were weak candidates. Gillibrand is a much stronger opponent than Mario Cuomo was in 1994. and Vallone and McCall.

Pataki won re-election in 1998 against Peter Vallone with less than 55% of the popular vote against Vallone-who was then a NYC Council Speaker. Most Republican Governors facing re-election were re-elected with more than 55% of the popular vote.
John Rowland (CT),John Engler(MI),Tom Ridge(PA),and Tommy Thompson(WI).
