I'm against the death penalty, but I think it should be an option for the most serious of crimes.

I'm in favor of making the death penalty automatic for two crimes:
  • Homicide in the commission of a felony
If someone dies because of an act you commit during a felony, then your life should be forfeit as well.  Note that this includes such things as felony DUI.
  • Attempted murder
Excellence in all matters, even criminal, should be encouraged.  Society should never encourge people to do less than their best.  Hence, I am not in favor of rewarding someone who failed to accomplish their objective by giving them a lesser sentence than that which they would have received had their intention been accomplished.
Other than that, no death penalty.

Personally, I don't see why we should pay extra for something that can't be reversed in the event that new evidence emerges. I'm strongly against the death penalty.

I accept it in cases of major war crimes like genocide and terrorism.

I support it when proof is conclusive - which becomes better and better as forensic science is advanced(something I think we ignore on this issue). We have had incidents int he past where innocent men where sentenced to the death penalty, but this is likely on the decline because of advanced forensics. If there's doubt, life imprisonment can be the punishment, along with hard labor - prisons used to be able to pay for themselves, even turn a profit, I don't see why we can't do that today for the harder criminals.

I support the death penalty in principle, but I'm STRONGLY against it in practice, mainly due to the fact that it's not perfect, and more than one person has come this close to being wrongly executed.

The day the death penalty is repealed, that will be a good day.

Strongly against it.  Besides the fact that science tells us that we can never, ever be 100% certain that we're right, I also don't believe on a moral level that it makes sense to kill people in an attempt to show that killing is wrong.  I would agree with John Dibble; we should simply lock these people up and put them to work in an attempt to make them actually pay for their crimes.  Then, if new, vindicating evidence comes to life, we can also do more than just say, "Oops, sorry we killed him."

Strongly support for serious crimes (mass murder, murder with special circumstances, etc).

I would also like to see the US start moving more towards reparations to the victim by the perpatrator, similar to what happens in Japan.   If robbers had to pay back what was stolen, I think it would help to dissuade them from committing the crime.

By that's just my $.02 worth  :-)

Strongly against. I disagree with it for moral reasons, plus I don't think it's effective.

There is one instance where I think I would support it though. If someone is already serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole, and then they murder someone while they are in prison. If they are already serving the maximum possible sentence, you can't punish them any further if there is no death penalty, so they have no incentive whatsoever to behave themselves while in prison.

I suppose we could institute torture or some such for these people instead, but I think the death penalty would be more humane, and better than having them go with no punishment at all.

I've always been against it and the record will show that. I think you are a bit confused because I said "for most serious crimes only choose neither for nor against", I said that in responce to carioca who says he believes the death penalty should be used only in extreme cases, such as mass-murder/genocide. It was an instruction not a viewpoint.

Strongly against.

Some criminals are probably so guilty about what they did that they want to die.

And do you really want to send the terrorists off to their 96 virgins they think they'll have?
