Yes, some of the words, but it sucks.

"God save the Queen"

God = Doesn't exist

Queen = Shouldn't exist

The first verse, and first verse only.  Like any real American.

As for my question, I know the relevant parts of La Marseillaise and all of O Canada in French, as well as various parts of the English version. I know most of the American and British ones.

Also, I know the words to the Spanish anthem under Franco. I love it.

Viva España, alzad los brazos, hijos
del pueblo español,
que vuelve a resurgir.

Both verses, of course.

I even know bits of the verses that they decided not to put into the anthem. The stuff about being loyal sons of britain etc.

Like Hugh, both verses, which puts us probably in about the top 5% of the population.

Also know God Save the Queen and some of God Defend New Zealand - which I think is one of the prettiest anthems.

Is the Austrian one that Hayden song? If so, that's also very pretty. Actually, I think it's the German issue: http://german.about.com/library/blmus_deutschland.htm - the orchestral version is the one I like.

This.

I also know "Waltzing Matilda", which ought to be the Australin national anthem, having learned it in school in second grade. I unfortunately know neither of Tagore's anthems; I ought to know both. I ought to know more Tagore in general.

I know the first verse of Australia's Advance Australia Fair:

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

Then I forget

It's the ex-Austrian anthem: the Germans stole the tune and put in new lyrics, so the Austrians had to change theirs.  (Glossing over the 200-year story of that tune in a one sentence blurb)

Anyways, as I said before, I know the first verse of The Star Spangled Banner and the first verse of God Save the Queen.  I know the tunes and a few snips of the lyrics to the French and German anthems, and absolutely love the tune to the Russian one.  The Russian people have managed to be blessed with consistently good national anthems in much the same way they've been cursed with consistently bad governments.

Somewhat tangential but,
Any Aussie's familiar with Unity is Strength?  Has this been co-opted by the far right?  I heard the song on a documentary once and really liked it- probably because it was to the tune of the Men of Harlech.

The American one of course. But also, as strange as it may seem:

O, Land of the free by the Carib Sea,
Our manhood we pledge to thy liberty
No tyrants here linger, despot must flee
This tranquil haven of democracy
The blood of our sires which hollows the sod,
Brought freedom from slavery oppression's rod
By the might of truth and the grace of God.
No longer shall we be hewers of wood.

Arise! Ye sons of the Baymen's clan,
Put on your armours, clear the land!
Drive back the tyrants let despots flee-
Land of the free by the Carib Sea!

Nature has blessed thee with wealth untold,
O'er mountains and valleys where prairies roll;
Our fathers, the Baymen, valiant and bold
Drove back the invaders; this heritage hold
From proud Rio Hondo to old Sarstoon,
Through coral isle,over blue lagoon;
Keep watch with the angels, the stars and moon;
For freedom comes to-morrow's noon.

Arise! Ye sons of the Baymen's clan,
Put on your armours, clear the land!
Drive back the tyrants let despots flee-
Land of the free by the Carib Sea!

Bad anthem. For one thing, it's in English. "Waltzing Matilda" ought to be the anthem.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was trying to find the song and got Stormfront hints. Maybe the Pauline Hanson crowd sings it now:(  I think it was written around the time of federation. Very Victorian, imperial song really but standard fare for the time.

Come Australians! Once for ever
Break the bars that now dissever
Brothers, to be parted never,
Unity is Strength!
Be no longer disunited,
By no phantom be affrighted
Let Australia’s wrongs be righted,
Unity is Strength!

All the divisions ended,
Each by all defended!
One our land And future grand,
And one the flag that’s o’er us,

One in race and one in story,
One power and one in glory,
One in all that makes a nation,
Unity is Strength!

See Victorians, all are waiting
Now with fervor unabating.
Let there be no hesitating,
Unity is Strength!

South Australia, nobly leading
New South Wales, the call, too heeding
Wave provincial far receding
Unity is Strength!

Answers back Tasmania
Vote yes for Australia
Queensland too, relies on you
And West Australia’s calling

Union offers – will ye flout it?
Now your answer – who dare doubt it?
To the wide world, we will shout it!
Unity is Strength!

Australia’s sons and daughters, all o’er us.
From the Grand Old Land that bore us,
Peals the patriotic chorus!
Unity is Strength!

See the Scotch, the Welsh, the English,
Ole time feuds and strife extinguish;
Irelands, sons, now too, distinguish,
Unity is Strength!

Scorn, then, ways provincial
Rise to Life Imperial,
Land of Light
And progress bright

No more shall strife degrade her,
Strong for War, should foes invade her
Great in Peace, if peace should aid her
Thus we pledge our loved Australia
Unity is Strength!

    Hasten to glory and supremacy,
    Glorify the Creator of the heavens!
    And raise the green flag
    Carrying the emblem of Light,
    Repeating: Allah is the greatest,
    O my country!
    My country, Live as the glory of Muslims!
    Long live the King for the flag and the country!

You'd be hard pressed to find one Saudi who knows what the hell that is. I've never heard it living over ten years in the country.
