I went with a character like Scott Westman because I wanted someone who was like Dent was young but still had quite a few years in Washington (2 senate terms=12 years) and who also is an extremely complex character. I also thought that he being elected senator would be a statement of how successful the counterculture of this reality was, as well as his run for president (though a failure).

At first I wanted to portray him as a libertarian Democrat from Montana, but after Disraeli made a president that was Libertarian I decided "why not" and made him a Libertarian senator. I also wanted, through Westman's eyes, describe the different factions that would've emerged if there was a successful Libertarian Party, especially the innerconflict between the D'Israeli Libertarians (mainstream, though a bit divided over the death penalty and abortion) and the Westman Libertarians (Left Libertarian faction that is the most civil libertarian faction out of all the parties).

As for his flashbacks and stuff, call it writer inspiration. I can't relate to most of anything about Westman, but I just thought that it would be most interesting to build this character who despite major flaws or unattractive behaviour (polygamist, atheist, drinking problem, does drugs, is attracted to teenage girls, wasn't there for his daughter for long periods of her life, is being led astray from his wife by his teenage step daughter, etc.) is still very much loved by not only the people who are his close friends and family, but of many average joes in the nation.

Nothing really inspiring, just got bored one day and started writing out this character. The fact that I had just finished reading a Stephen King novel (Insomnia, I believe) has nothing to do with the sudden dark turn of my character (possible sarcasm).

John Benet McDowell
Democratic Party – Nebraska
Congressman (1989-present)
March 20, 1960 (Columbus, Nebraska)

John Benet McDowell was born to a Scotch-Irish family in Columbus, Nebraska in 1960. After graduation from High School, he attended the University of Nebraska. He is Roman Catholic, and married to his high school sweetheart Marsha Collins. They have two children: son John Benet, Jr. (1987), and daughter Isabella Maria (1989). In 1988, he was elected to the House of Representatives and is a member of the fiscal and social conservative Democrats. He is considered a potential candidate for Governor of Nebraska in 1990 against Republican Governor Kay Orr.

Welcome to the game Smiley

I don't know if you all noticed, but most of characters (Westman, McDowell or Dent) were all elected at young age Wink

True. I am 47 in this timeline (I am probably one of the older players here), and even that might be considered young for the purposes of presidential elections.

Name: Patrick Bolan Rutherford
Date of Birth: April 22, 1948
Party: Democratic
State: Washington
Senator (January 3, 1989 - present)

Born on April 22, 1948 to an Irish father and an American mother in New York City, New York, at the age of five, upon his father's death, Rutherford moved to Seattle, Washington. Always fascinated by politics, it wasn't until the late 1960s, when, during the midst of the Vietnam War Rutherford attended Harvard University, where he was able to convey his then considered radical politics. Preaching mostly to the masses the ideal of civil liberties and often condemning the Johnson and Nixon Administrationís conduct of the Vietnam War, he would become a controversial figure in campus life.

By early 1974, Rutherford had graduated from Harvard with a BA in Political Science, worked on the ill-fated campaign of George McGovern and became a father for the first time. Despite offers to remain in the northeast to work as a political consultant he decided to go back to Washington where he would further developed his politics, at first as a teacher, and then later as a public servant. With the endorsement of former Representative Brock Adams, in 1984 he successfully challenged Representative Mike Lowry amidst allegations of sexual harassment in the Democratic primary for the state's seventh congressional district. Upon his election in November 1984, Rutherford would become a proponent of the mixed economy and social libertarianism in the House, often supporting the DíIsraeli Administrationís social policy, in particular measures to decriminalise most drugs. Despite enduring another bitter primary battle for the US Senate with Mike Lowry, Rutherford would go on to defeat his Republican opponent Slade Gorton in a civil matter, receiving just over 50 percent of the vote.

In the Senate so far, Rutherford has continued to be one of the Democratsí biggest proponents of social libertarianism and the mixed economy. He currently remains with his long-time partner Laura Fischer, despite allegations of past misdemeanours.

Name: Robert P. Nuttmann
Date of Birth: October 31, 1958
Party: Republican
State: Pennsylvania
State Senator (1987 - present); State Senate Majority Leader (1987 - present)

Bob Nuttmann was born on Halloween, 1958, in Philadelphia. He grew up in a middle-class family. He graduated from law school at the age of 26, and joined a firm. At the age of 28, Nuttmann decided to run for the state Senate. In his Philly district, Nuttmann (a Republican) was considered unelectable, but high-profile scandals on the part of the incumbent contributed to his narrow win 51%-48%. Simultaneously, the Senate Republican leader retired to run for Attorney General, and Nuttmann, the youngest Senator, became the Majority Leader.

Bob Nuttmann is the frontrunner for the Republican gubernatorial nomination against Bob Casey, 1990.

Certainly a joke.

19-year old State Senator. Beside, you need to be 30 to be Governor Tongue

Name: Robert P. Nuttmann
Date of Birth: October 31, 1968
Party: Republican
State: Pennsylvania
State Senator (1987 - present); State Senate Majority Leader (1987 - present)

Bob Nuttmann was born on Halloween, 1968, in Philadelphia. He grew up in a middle-class family. Turning 18, Nuttmann decided to run for the state Senate. Simultaneously, the Senate Republican leader retired to run for Attorney General, and Nuttmann, the youngest Senator, became the Majority Leader.

Bob Nuttmann, despite barely over legal drinking age, is the frontrunner for the Republican gubernatorial nomination against Bob Casey, 1990.

Actually, it wasn't a joke - many small cities have achieved mayors age 18, so why not a state Senator? But, since 30 is the minimum gubernatorial age, my character is now 28.

You will need to fix your date of birth, then.

By the way, right now we are in mid-1989.

April 16, 1989
Former Vice President Ricardo Barnes apartment in D.C. hotel.

Dent: I know itís kind of unexpected, but I could not miss an opportunity.
Barnes No problem, Iím glad I see you.
Dent: Last days were very interesting. Looks like my party in majority, as well as growing wing within Libertarian Party, represented by you or Scott, have much more in common, than this irritating Blue Dog minority with me. See, Iíve been thinking about one very extreme idea.
Barnes: What is that idea?
Dent: We know each other for many years so Iíll be as straight as I can with you, Ricardo. Iím thinking about an alliance between Democrats and Libertarians like you, who are growing and growing more.
Barnes: Well, you know, we already worked on many projects togehter.
Dent: But just as shortlived, based on single issues, congressional cooperation. We have differences, but not as great as between each of us and Republicans. We agree on such matters like health care, foreign policy, civil liberties, but when we are apart, Republicans and Blue Dogs are winning. We are two parties and it have to stay this way, but as we approaching 1992 and future races...
Barnes: Continue, please.
Dent: We can make our alliance permanent and field common ticket in 1992, form bipartisian cabinet. A Democrat for President in 1992 and Libertarian in 1996 with common backing, as we all supports one term limit. I propose Democrat right now not only, because now weíre stronger part of potential alliance, but because this would allow me to win back Senate seat in Alabama in 1996. But then, I make sure to elect Libertarian. Libertarian like you.
Barnes: Oh, my God... Are you serious?
Dent: Very serious, even if I know this is shocking and could be unprecented change in American politics ever made.
Barnes: Iím asking are you serious because I thought recently about something like this. Iím sure I can manage things in Libertarian field and you in Democratic, but we need to talk with one more person.
Dent: With Scott, I know. We have to work with him.
Barnes: Well, I heard you had problems...
Dent: This is about politics. We can meet all, and as long he we both, Scott and I, abstain from any personal issues, it can be great.

I think that belongs in the main thread.

Ben Roberts has always been known for his liberal views. He's anti-death penalty, pro-choice, pro-universal health care (The Dent-Kennedy Act was  called the Dent-Roberts-Kennedy Act by some people because of his work in the bill.) He was elected to the House in 1976 in a very close election, and then was elected to the Senate in 1982. He is a very popular senator, and has been criticized by Jesse Helms 59 times. (49 in private.) He considers this, behind the Dent-Kennedy-(Roberts) Act and being a card-carrying member of the the ACLU (anyone get the The American President reference?), his biggest achievement.
Roberts has two sons, Ben, Jr., 14 and Jack, 21.
