How quickly we forget the lessons of the past.

There's a method to my madness. I promise. Wink

So others tells me. Tongue

If you do that to create chaos, that will turn ugly.

I have a feeling we are about to see a law maintaining the stability of Atlasia repealed in order to create chaos. I fear the game may finally return to the dark ages if that happens.

I don't want chaos, but I don't want to use censorship to maintain stability. Last time I heard that explanation, that was Chinese government explaining why he is censoring Internet.

The dark ages?

I think we are hearkening back to an imagined past again. It's as bad when the past is made a dystopia as when it's made a utopia.

It appears we may now have support for outright repeal, and I won't stand in its way, of course, being the person that introduced this in the first place.

I think that's a fair point.

Why did we create this law? Because people were posting PMs or threatening to, usually in order to embarrass or to occasionally orchestrate the harrassment of another poster. They were isolated incidents but they occurred because people couldn't 'play nice.' And when PM's were posted before for the purposes of 'harrassment', that was intercepted by the Mods who then took action, because harrassment is against forum rules and against common decency as well.

But also the game lacks trust. Making deals, or building alliances in order to play the game or get elected is now viewed with a suspicion that seems entirely self contained within Atlasia. There are several games that require strategy, PM's for support, building alliances and so on that take place elsewhere on the forum and don't elicit this 'obsessiveness.' So we make a law with an in game penalty to clamp down on it but it doesn't necessarily do anything to change the game. If divulging something means more to you than the game then you post it anyway regardless of the rules. And there are ways around the law like paraphrasing a private message (as Marokai did with a PM of mine a few days ago)

5 Nays, 3 Ayes, 1 Abstaining. The amendment fails.

I'd like to announce to you all that I've changed my opinion on this bill and will vote for nothing less than an outright repeal of the PPA.

hooray!

hooray!

How quickly we forget the lessons of the past.

Aye

It would most likely be over turned in the courts anyway, so it doesn't matter.

It's very difficult for the Senate to make a call on this if there are outstanding constitutional issues that must be adressed. Then again the law has not been formally challeneged (?) so it leaves us a bit stuck.

If there is a challenge, it won't be affected by the repeal. The law was still in effect when the "crimes" were committed.

I know. What I was getting at was that we could use some legal counsel or guidance on this bill and probably should have done when the bill its repealing was drafted back in June. We certainly will need guidance if another bill comes before the Senate.

Aye.

Better out than in for now.

I hope we won't see any need to reinstate the law, but yes, if we do at some point come to that conclusion, we should be careful as to how we draft it.

6 Ayes, 2 Nays, this bill has enough votes to pass. Senators have 24 hours to change their votes.

This would be terrible, and create much more uneeded drama on Atlasia. You all will regret your "Aye" vote in a few weeks...
