This has to be seen to be believed - from the joke that is Joe Arpaio's Maricopa county, the police illegally take papers from the defence lawyer right behind her back in open court. Hilariously, the defendant himself clearly notices a while before his lawyer, and awkwardly doesn't know what to do. A circus then follows.

Typical.  And I don't mean just of the US - this is the nature of all police.

Oh, I'm sure they'd all love to do that - but to feel confident enough to actually do it...

Hopefully the sheriff will be jailed for this crime - preferably in one of his scorching pink tents.

A lot of conservatives, at least on Hannity's forum, want Arpaio to be Sarah Palin's attorney general.

I'm pretty sure there's a law in this country that says if the defense attorney's back is turned, the rest of the laws do not apply.

The victim seems to be an hispanic, and perhaps already a con...

So, upon further reading it appears that the reason I saw this linked to today was that the officer in question has just been convicted of contempt of court, and given the "punishment" of having to hold a press conference at which he apologizes to the lawyer. If he doesn't hold the press conference by a Dec. 1, he must report to the county jail. But his boss is ordering him not to!

Pretty much any of the possibilities between now and Dec. 1 are ridiculous.

Joe Arpaio is a pennyante authoritarian nutjob whose sole reason for existence is to give the citizens of Maricopa County tummy butterflies when they reflect on how good they are at abiding the law, in contrast to the pink underweared scum of his jail.

Arpaio needs to be put in jail. Where is the mainstream media coverage of this?

The judge was pretty phlegmatic about it all. I as a judge would have flipped out, and the deputy would never set foot in my courtroom again. The deputy's conduct was outrageous.

I wonder what was in the letter that was so transfixing to the one deputy that he summoned deputy porky to purloin the letter in plain sight.

Well Arpaio isn't going to follow the judge's orders, or allow porky to follow said orders. That idiot thinks he is above the law.

Who else thinks that Maricopa County public opinion of this incident will still be on the side of Arpaio and his goons?

Where sbane is the story that says all of that? It was not in the tape clip obviously. What were the judge's orders that Arpaio is stonewalling on?  And if he is, would not the judge rule him in contempt of court?

Read Linus Van Pelt's second post in this thread.

Thanks. IC now. However the judge's order was silly, and probably unenforceable, and maybe a violation of the first amendment, so Arpaio may have seen that as an opening. The judge strikes me as an idiot. The deputy should have been suspended without pay in my opinion for a period of time, and then sent to duties that do not involve being in a courtroom ever again.  Not only love (to refer to that silly novel and movie) , but also accountability has nothing to do with saying your sorry.  Sorry is about remorse about getting caught in this kind of context.  Having said that, Arpaio appears to be an out of control grandstanding media driven whore, who knows no limits short of going to the slammer himself.  That is quite disturbing in a law enforcement official.

Outrageous - the deputy needs to be fired.

Then again, isn't it her job to be somewhat calm and reasoned and figure out what happened?

Probably.  Maricopa County is a world unto itself.

Ya, it is a judgment call. But when something outrageous happens, it is not a requirement that a judge act like some zombie akin to an animated cadaver either.

She seemed confused - but I was wondering how she didn't see what was going on.

If I was US Attorney for that district in Arizona Arpaio would've been indicted long ago. And that deputy needs to be fired.
