u gotta level it up to lv. 20 man. then that gyrados can kick some serious ass (although its not really useful 4 u if you picked squirtle).

if u need hlp raising it then just put it as ur starter and bring it back out rite @ the start of battle. youll get the ex pts w/out hurting the thing

With some serious grinding, you can have Gyrados well before you have any right to such a powerful creature.

Then again, I haven't played them since the original Red/Blue, so what do I know?

Apparently the new games have Level 100 Magikarp. Why would you want to catch a Level 100 Magikarp?

Magikarp is basically useless. It only has like, one move, Splash. Wait until you get into the higher-level areas, and then uses your fishing rod to fish for a Gyrados.
