Yes it probably is, but of course that doesn't debunk environmentalism in any way.. Pretty much any idea can be taken to a ridiculous extreme, no matter how sensible it was originally.

     I tend to think of primitivism as being more akin to the suicide of 98% of humanity, really.

No. Primitivism, if established somehow (an obviously big "somehow") would actually render environmentalism a moot point.

Primitive existence is much less energy-efficient than modern existence. As time passes, we use energy more and more efficiently. I'd say environmentalism could easily be linked to high-tech fetishism.
