Not that anyone familiar with Geras will find much new here, but we really should use this board more:

I go along with that - though I'll say what he needed to touch upon more, as it is still the greatest problem (from a theoretical viewpoint) with the groups we call 'the western left', vulgar oppositionism (see current discourses on the Afghan war).

What was cut loose? "The (western) left"?

Since the early 20th century, what has the left ever been but communism and socialism? The mystery is not that the left has been engaging in 'vulgar oppositionism' and drift since the 1980s, but that it has continued to exist at all (although that is now up for question).

The car has already hit a tree, the body was not wearing a seatbelt and continues to hurl forward, past the front windshield; this part goes to the left, that part goes to the right. The vultures are coming to feed on on it; this one is called 'third worldism', that one is called third way, yet another one is postmodernism. But eventually the carcass will be used up as well.

Not that "the (western) right" is doing too well itself...
