Back in Ohio, thank you waves were given after such driving situations as letting someone turn across or into your lane when you have the right of way, breaking to let someone cross the street, and stuff like that.

Down here it's common for people in front of you to stick their hand out the window and give a little wave after they merge into your lane, as though you've done them a favour because most people would just keep driving even though there's a giant stream of cars next to you who need to merge. I mean, maybe if I stopped and let two or three people merge in front of me, I'd expect a wave from the extras. But just letting some guy in who you would otherwise run into is just silly, don't you think? So I don't do it. Am I an ass? Is this common elsewhere?

Unrelated tangent: there should be a PM application on the FaceBook. Get right on that.

Does not waving "thanks" make you an asshat?  No.  I do it though.  And it's been done everywhere I've lived.

Side note-people that let more than one guy in are asshats.

Yep, in France people do that to.

And, yep, obviously, you're an ass.

Well, yes, the guy is not forced to let you pass, thank him. Establish a relationship with your human brother who took care of you....

Well, I don't drive, but personally, I know I'd appreciate a thank.

I only wave when somebody has let me into their lane or moved to the side on a street where there are cars parked on both sides so I can get through. So no, I don't think you're an asshole...

Apparently people are used to different levels of driving etiquette. There's one person I know who's from Illinois and, according to her, drivers in the Midwest wave to each other for everything little thing, even just a friendly wave to the driver driving alongside them on the road. I don't know how accurate a description that it is, but such ideas are certainly foreign to me. In New York certainly, the only waving you see is the one-finger wave.

Oh, just a difference in France, people don't make the sign out of the window, they do it inside the car, and unless you've tainted glasses you can see it, tainted glasses are very rare here. Also, it can be just a sign of the head.

I don't think you're an asshole.

The people that are assholes are the ones that see a sign "right lane closed .5 miles" and instead of trying to get over right there, drive .49 miles right before their lane ends and then try to get over there. I'll let them over if they try get over early, but if they wait until the last minute when they had plenty of time, no way. Also goes for people in the toll tag lane crossing the Crescent City Connection. The lane is toll tags only painted anywhere from a mile to a half of mile before the toll booth and some of these people wait until right before the booth to get over. Now if there is an accident and one lane is blocked as a result that's different and I'll let people over.

Unless I need to move into other lanes quickly and don't have the time, I try to wave to the driver that let me in.  A lot of people don't, and I don't think that you're an asshole for failing to do so.

I hate, hate, hate drivers who do that.  It bothers me to no end that people can't get in line when there's plenty of room and wait an extra minute or two.

Based on the assumption that you are a human being... yes, you're an asshole. However, I'd say that you're hardly the worst of us lot, so you're fine.

I'm not the right person to ask.  People here wave to most people that drive by on rural roads.

We don't stick our hands out the window or anything special.. we've perfected efficient waving because if the roads are busy there will be a lot of waving going on...

So we do the two finger lift off the top of the steering wheel.  Sometimes if you're brave, you just do the index finger.

Now if someone is nice enough to let you merge or something like that, they might actually give you a full wave of thanks.  Or if you've made a mistake and somebody relents and lets you in, you give them a little wave of "I know I messed up, but I appreciate your courtesy"..

Not too many people do this here except some of the elderly and natives of the area. All of the Californian/-insert southwestern state here- exburban migrants to my area never do this.
