Let's say the economy stays in the tank and the situation in Afghanistan is much worse. After some struggle, Johnson wins the GOP primary. Obama keeps his running mate and you may pick one for Johnson.

Discuss, with maps.

Assuming things are going pretty badly for Obama, as you described, it could be a dramatically re-aligning election...

With Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky.

With Senator Peter Schiff of Connecticut.

I'd have to guess that no matter whom Johnson gets paired up with would negate his reasonable credentials.

Why is that?

Johnson would be forced to pick a socially conservative candidate to keep the religious right happy.
Going by the scenario you presented, here is my guess with a Johnson/Daniels ticket.

Johnson would crush Obama in the popular vote.

I would vote for Johnson unless he ran with a social conservative. Then I would not even consider voting for him under any circumstance.

He'd probably be forced to pick one anyway, given that the conservative base is very unlikely to warm up to many of his proposals.

Seems about right.
