Any particular reason for the extreme Republican tilt?

Compare it to 1920 and 1928. Michigan was extremely Republican at that point. Plus Davis was unpopular throughout the Midwest, but Michigan stuck with Coolidge while the rest split for LaFollette.

Davis got just 7% in Wayne County, MI. Smith would get 37%.

The midwest used to be a GOP stronghold.  And after 8 years of Wilson, domestic unrest, race riots, bad economy, League of Nations debacle, Harding was able to win in a historic landslide in 1920. The economy recovered, and Coolidge benefited in 1924 during a time of peace and prosperity.  Moreover, the 1924 Democratic Convention was a total mess; it lasted 103 ballots before John Davis emerged as the consensus candidate.  The DNC back then required two-thirds to win the nomination.

Did autoworkers at the time still lean Republican due to the tariff issue?
