Could we see more libertarian elements of the GOP take power?

Will the statists in AR and WV and KY go back to the Democrats?

I don't see why it would. Political movements never really die, they just mold over into a different form.

Religious zealotry and it's influence on politics tends to wax and wane over time.  I think/hope that it is currently on the wane (though it may flare a little over 2012 among pseudo-Christians who take pagan calendars a bit to seriously), but rest assured it will return again.  And again.  and so on.

The Religious Right isn't going away; it is simply shrinking for now. It isn't winning over young adults, and if anything, many kids of RR families leave the RR at the first opportunity.

The Religious Right has been the most reliable conduit of voters to the GOP in recent years.

In short, no.

In a way, I think we may already be seeing that, as much of the teabagger anger against Obama seems to be directed against taxes and spending, rather than traditional religious right targets like gays, feminists, and abortion.

not until Obama is out of office. He's black, you see.

The Religious Right in its current form didn't really exist until the late 1960s, when it sprang up in response to the Counterculture. Even then, it didn't really get going until Roe v. Wade.

Not so much that as that they're always fighting a losing battle, even when it looks like they're winning. The trend in our nation's history has, for the most part, been towards more freedom and equality, not less.

Anyhow, saying that the Religious Right will no longer be part of the Republican party is about as realistic as saying that minorities will no longer be part of the Democratic party.

Do you know anything about the masses that make up the movement? My family is full of them.

Now, I don't advocate, say, removing the pro-life plank from the platform. Just some changes on issues like gay rights, War on Drugs, DADT, and "terrorism." The Republicans need to look less like statists and more like freedom-supporting conservatives.

No, but I used to be one and I still have a great many friends on that side and I agree with most of their theology, I just don't like the way they try to shove it down people's throats.  The ideology will never die, but the way they go about it is wrong and unbiblical.  A prime example of someone who I am great friends with and agree with her theology, but disagree of how she's trying to get it across is Rep. Sally Kern.  I know her really well and her eldest son used to be my music minister back in the middle 1990s.  I went with her church to church camp during the summer of 1996.  Her husband is the pastor of that church.  I am really good friends with her and we agree on a lot of points, but not on delivery of those points.
