Of course. In fact, back before rocks cooled, I used a manual one if you can believe it. Smiley I also used my mother's typewriter, this handsome black thing that weighed a ton, that she had in college, circa around 1938 or so.

Couldn't have been much fun. I suppose anytime you made a typographical error, you got to rewrite the entire page on which it appeared?

In middle school we had one for the school newspaper.. because it was easier for some newspaper things..

But no, you didn't have to re type the whole paper.. you could white out or more modern typewriters have white ribbons for correcting mistakes.

Still, if it's a big paper that you're presenting, I can see where you wouldn't want any errors.

As I said, I never suffered the gross misfortune of having to use one. But I don't see how white-out would help if you omitted a word or two. I guess you could white out the entire line and hope there is enough space in the margin—or white out the entire paragraph, and hope (in most cases, with more confidence) that there is enough space in the sum of the remaining margins.

In the above paragraph, the "in most cases, " and "remaining" bits were added at the end. I doubt it would be pleasant to make that change on a typewriter.

Yes, my parents had an old electric one in the basement. I never typed anything serious on it, just played around with a bit.

There's actually a typewriter shop in Richfield I found out a few months ago. Very odd. Small place though with very limited hours, so your basic hobbyist shop with a very limited but no doubt loyal customer base.

Back in Primary School, my mother taught me to type on her old manual typewriter. When I went to High School, we had to study typing as one of our subjects, but we used electric typewriters for that class. The classroom was full of desks with typewriters - there was one computer room in that block and every Friday, instead of having a class in the room with the typewriters, we'd have class in the computer room. A year or two later, they replaced the typewriters and just made them all computer rooms.

Yes.

If I ever have to type any sort of English essay again in my life, I would like to do it on a typewriter.

Generally you didn't start typing until the paper was done done.  Like others said, you had white out or a second white ribbon to type over the typo or whatever...but for the most part you were just really, really careful when typing.  It was a serious pain in the ass, but it was all we knew.  Word processors were out by this time, but they were expensive for a High School kid (as were early PCs).

Yes, I used a typewriter. One year we got a word processor for a gift and it was pretty cool- a big step up.

My big mistake was blowing off typing class in High School.  I never had a computer growing up so when I went to College I was pretty ed when it came to writing a 20 page paper.   I often found myself in the position of writing out my paper and paying my roomates to type it out.  I even bought one of those speaking/typing programs to try to get around my handicap.
