In middle school we had one for the school newspaper.. because it was easier for some newspaper things..

But no, you didn't have to re type the whole paper.. you could white out or more modern typewriters have white ribbons for correcting mistakes.

Still, if it's a big paper that you're presenting, I can see where you wouldn't want any errors.
