Who's going to replace Gordon Brown as Labour Leader, once the party is booted from 10 Downing Street in May?

Just wondering as who ever it is could easily be PM within a few years anyway given how things are going.

Unfortunately, David Milliband. Ed would be better...

Isn't David Milbrand not standing at the next election though?

No one knows, actually. This will be the most open Labour leadership election in decades. Something that journalists often forget is the structure of Labour internal elections - the Leader is elected from an electoral collage of M.P's, Individual Party Members and members of Affiliated Organisations (which, in practice, means levy-paying members of affiliated Unions). I mention this because, to put it mildly, the most high-profile of Ralph's sons does not get on with the leadership of the largest affiliate (Unite).

Why do so many people dislike David Milliband? He seems to be more unpopular in his own party than nationwide.

Personally, I don't have a problem with him. He just shouldn't be leader.

Probably from the rumours, from months back obviously, that he might have been appoined E.U foreign minister.

It'll be Jack Straw.

A likely loss shouldn't lead to factional infighting (though it seems alot has pented up since 2007/1997/1994; pick your date) and if they have any sense (which I of course hope they do not) pick a heavyweight, hands clean middle of the road leader as 'caretaker' to the next election.

That's if Labour suffer a heavy defeat.

If they don't, and they have the chance of ousting the Tories in 4/5 years then they may go for someone shiny and new.

Will Mandelson, not compete officially, but let think he may be a candidate ?

Isn't it too late for Alan Johnson ?

Andrew, this is the Labour Party
we're talking about. Factional infighting is eternal. Though civil wars aren't - there's a difference Grin

1900. The LRC elected two M.P's that year - one promptly defected to the Liberals.
