Fun fact: I voted for the guy who got fifth place in my precinct! (last place, not counting the 0% candidates)

Okay, so overall, Landrieu lost only one precinct, and was held to under 50% in only five others; he got a majority in 360 out of 366 precincts. Convincing win, I'd say.

The only Republican candidate only managed to get 5% of the vote.  LOL!

Well, Georges was a crypto-Republican. He was a big fundraiser for Bush, then ran as an Independent in 2007, then became a Democrat because Republicans have no chance in New Orleans (yes, I know, blah blah blah Cao, but that was a once-in-a-lifetime happening).

It does look like Republicans have a shot at picking up Council District A -- it used to be represented by the guy who came in second in the primary, until he lost in 2006. It's probably the least Democratic (i.e. whitest) district in the city, only voting about 65-35 for Obama.

(I live in Council District A!)

I don't know the specifics, but the Republican that was third overall basically ran as the anti-Batt Republican; the campaign signs literally had the name BATT, in bold, crossed out. While there's a decent chance he'll win, yes, most of the voters for the other Republican candidate probably won't show up for him.

Can Gov. Jindal appoint a Republican to replace Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu, since he has effectively become the next mayor of New Orleans?  I am not clear on the succession rules where an incumbent Lt. Gov. wins an election to another office.

There's some talk that Jindal will just make an effort to abolish the position, since Louisiana's Lt. Governor is particularly useless.

The governor appoints a replacement, subject to approval of the state legislature, who will serve until a special election is held in November.

There was a Constitutional Amendment regarding this a few years back. I may be off a little bit, but before, if the Lt. Gov. resigned, a replacement was appointed, but he could not become Gov. if the Gov. resigned (since he wasn't elected). I think SoS or some other executive state wide officer would move up. Now there will be a special election and the Lt. Gov. can move up.

So in other word a replacement would be appointed who did absolutely nothing and would continue to do nothing even if the Governor resigned. What a great job.

Followup on District A: The runoff was tonight, and the Democrat smashed the Republican by a 62-38 margin. The Republicans remain shut out of the city council.

He'll be sworn in on May 3.
