Yes. He wouldn't apologize for several days, then he'd go on Fox News to blast political correctness and get applauded by Hannity and Limbaugh for speaking the truth and defending the 1st Amendment. Then it would appear in fundraising letters for him--congressman under attack for criticizing Obama's agenda. Unless he said something really serious, in which case four days later he'd apologize "if anyone took offense" and wait a few months before starting his outrage tour.

Bad comments by Reid. Glad he apologized quickly and Obama accepted it. Obviously doesn't help him any.

Normally I don't think Reid should resign, but those who wanted Lott to resign as Majority Leader a while back are hypocrites if they don't think Reid should do the same.

Trent Lott endorsed a segregationist platform and implied that the civil rights movement was a "problem" we could have avoided, then refused to acknowledge he did anything wrong. Reid objectified Obama and showed ignorance, but quickly apologized. Never mind that it was the Republicans who wanted Lott to resign as Majority Leader because he was embarrassing them... no doubt they do think Reid should resign as Majority Leader, and resign his seat, etc.

It's the difference between "Hey, if Hitler had won the war, things would have been better" and "funny, he doesn't sound Jewish unless he's speaking in front of a Jewish audience."

Remarks like this (ie; that he only sounds like one of them when he's with them) were made about David Lloyd George and his Welsh accent and (early in his career) Harold Wilson and his Yorkshire accent. Cynical (and I suppose showing a certain level of out-of-touchness with his choice of words, but then all Senators are out-of-touch. It's part of the job description) but harmless.

my grandparents are olds and they know not to say "negro" anymore. The phrase wasn't considered offensive when they were my age, but times have changed.

Actually, I've known some Black people, older, who when asked to self identify, will write "Negro" or "Colored" on forms.  I don't the term itself is bigoted, just dated.
