And yet Labour's 1931 vote share was higher than it's 2010 vote share.
Ah, but in 1931 there were masses and masses of two candidate races (I think a majority in total, but I've not checked. Not far off in any case). Two candidate races in which Labour was generally losing by 30pts or whatever. So immediately not comparable. Then there's the fact that 61 of the 67* unopposed races were in National constituencies.
And, anyway, it's only true if you include the various ILP candidates in with the Labour total, which only makes sense if you also add the entire Liberal total (minus the Lloyd George family plus retainers) into a single National total.
*An extremely and unusually large figure even for the time.

I would've been terrified of Michael Foot's campaign for nuclear disarmament, as much as I hate nuclear weapons. Heck, if there were a Liberal candidate in my constituency (as opposed to an SDP one) I might've stuck with Labour.

During the late 18th Century and early 19th Century, I would have supported the Whigs, being a religious non-conformist. My allegience would also have likely transferred to he Liberals. I would become a huge fan of Gladstone to the same level Politico is a Romney fan.
Even when the Liberals began to shift to the Left, I would have continued to vote Liberal up to Lloyd-George, another non-conformist.
After WWI, the leftward direction of the Liberals would drive me into he arms of he Tories. I might have voted National Liberal in 1931, but would have remained a Tory up until the present.

No one outside of David Alton's constituency (and that hardly counts) switched
to
the Liberals in 1979. No one who voted against the Coalition in 1918 switched to Lloyd George in 1922. Also, no one voted Labour in 1935 and Tory in 1945.
