^^ I would definitely avoid electrician/cable/heating and air jobs as they tend to be very hard on fats. I know the guys that come to my house fit in the smallest places! I don't know how they do it.

The electrician idea is just that, an idea. As much as I would love to do it, I'm too fat and too old to get started.
I'm still planning to go the retail/grocery route starting January 3. I'm still thinking Wal-Mart or Target or something like that. I won't do Lowe's or Home Depot simply because I don't know squat about the merchandise. I could probably point them in the right direction in the store, but ask me a question about what this does or what that does, and I'll don the deer in the headlight look.

Can anybody honestly see Bushie climbing a utility pole in twenty degree weather after an ice storm? Or even a ten foot ladder to do electrical work in a new subdivision? Gee, I hear hedge fund mamagers make a lot of money. Maybe you should go out and do that too.

It wasn't 9 hours, it was 7 short flicks in about 4 1/2 hours.
Whatever it was, it was a mistake, because it caused me to oversleep church again this morning.

Sorry to read about all your recent troubles, Jeff. I haven't followed this thread for several months, but I caught some updates from you on Facebook and had to take a look. I never saw you as a call-center guy, but you'd made an honest effort for stable employment after a number of mistakes earlier in the year. It just didn't work out ... it sounds like, if your call quality wasn't up to snuff, Sprint had legitimate reason to let you go. I've had to fire many a nice guy who tried hard, because -- in the end -- they just couldn't handle the job at the level I needed them to. That's usually not an easy move for an employer.
As many people have already said -- I'd definitely look for work now and not wait.

Thanks, Jesse.
I am going to wait until January 3, because while I need a job, I desperately need this vacation next week. I need a break. I also don't want to sacrifice my vacation for a job that may only last a week or two. Starting January 3, I'm going to hit the pavement and the paper hard. I'm not going to rule too much out. I've got a list of things I can't do, such as call centers, sales, etc. I am going to look anywhere other than those two genres.

I just like the idea of kind of a thrilling job. Legally stealing cars and sort of playing detective in tracking them down seems rather exciting to me. I'd feel the same way about Seth Rogen's job in Pineapple Express even though he wasn't doing anything that would be illegal under most circumstances.
I'd feel the same way about working for the CIA if they didn't do such horrible things.
I really like this post of yours BRTD - candid and personal, and I think insightful about yourself, and it strikes a chord in my own "harmonics" as it were.

What enormous preparation does it take for a 4 day trip to Florida?

Well, I have to make a list of everything I'm going to take, which shouldn't be too hard since I'll only take one suitcase. Then, it's a matter of making sure everything is washed. I'll have to lay things out and add to it and take away from it as needed over the next 9 days. I'll also have to clean the house so I don't come back on December 26 to a filthy house.
There's a method to my madness and there is a lot of stuff to do between now and next Wednesday.

Epic Fail. Dude, you're going to Florida for a few days. The night before your flight, grab a duffel bag and throw in some clothes and toiletries. Packing should take 15 minutes, tops. You don't need to "lay anything out. Especially over a week before your trip. There's no reason why you'd have any more laundry or cleaning this week than any other week. Frankly, you're using this trip as an excuse not to do anything. I'm glad you're going to see your family and have Christmas and everything, but that is not an excuse to waste this week. Go out and look for work.

The reason I'm not going to look real hard this week is I don't want to take a chance of anything starting before Christmas, especially for a job that may not last too deep into January. Plus, my Dad told me to just hold off until January as he thinks I would be just wasting my breath if I tried to do anything now. He advises to wait until January 3 and then hit the pavement and the paper hard. I'll look in the Sunday paper on January 2 and figure out a game plan for that week. I know it seems like a bad idea, but seriously, three weeks is not going to make that much difference, especially when there are two big holiday weekends in the middle of that period.
