http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/01/whitman-chips-in-another-20-million.html

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman’s campaign spent nearly $19 million in 2009, according to figures provided by her advisers. The former EBay chief executive donated an additional $20 million this week to her gubernatorial effort -- bringing her personal contributions thus far to $39 million.

With the new $20-million infusion, Whitman will have $30.5 million in her gubernatorial bank account, according to a campaign statement. Whitman has said she is willing to spend more than $100 million of her own money in her quest for the governorship.

$100 MILLION!?! WTF?

Has that ever been spent in a non-presidential race?

I'll vote for Whitman.  She seems pretty good.

I kind of shudder at the notion that anyone would want to be governor of California now.

Indeed, I've questioned the intelligence of anyone who wants to be governor of California for quite some time.  I've compared it to competing to be captain of the Titanic

For once I totally agree with you.

It's not quite that bad. California will make it through. The quality of state government has deteriorated in the 1990s and 2000s, but reform will eventually occur, no matter how gradual. The Governor still has the ability to make a difference, even if they don't end up popular.

I would vote for him in the general (not like he has any hope in the primary)
