If you could have only voted for one of the two former presidents, which president would you have voted for and why?

I'd vote for Nixon, hands down. I used to consider Reagan to be a good president and I still believe the optimism he projected was much needed at the time he was elected. But after doing some recent research, I've concluded that his administration was probably the most corrupt to serve this country in the modern era.

Nixon certainly was no saint and Watergate put a stain on the office that has never been fully removed. However, it seems that the Reagan administration had a wider breadth of corruption and the policies the Reagan administration pursued were generally far worse than that of the Nixon administration.

What did Nixon do so great to counterbalance his many crimes?

The Nixon administration had a lot more foresight into domestic issues like energy, health care, and the environment than the Reagan administration.

Nixon was terrible on all those issues.

His economic policies were the worst since FDR.

Hmmm...being slowly bathed in acid or having my balls soaked in kerosene and set on fire....

What to do, what to do...

Nixon, I guess.  The EPA, the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts were (and are) good things.

Nixon. At least most of his bad decisions don't still affect us now.

I'd easily vote for Nixon. Both of them were crooks--Nixon just did a worse job of hiding the evidence and thus got caught. But I'd prefer Nixon since he supported many social programs, high taxes on the rich, environmental protection, and universal healthcare. Nixon was also pro-environment and a hawk and a genius when it came to foreign policy (such as establishing relations with China). Also Nixon was much smarter and more thoughtful than Reagan when it came to determining policy. Unlike Nixon, Reagan only cared about the rich and the military-industrial complex--not ordinary people. Finally, Nixon was much more fiscally responisble than Reagan, despite the fact that it was Reagan who was a self-declared fiscal conservative.

Ronald Reagan represents consumerism and excess. He represents the "fast food" devouring, anti-environment, lazy fat ass nation that the U.S. has become since the 80s.

At least Nixon knew that "supply-side economics" were a complete crock of sh**t.

Amen to that. It's a sad shame that 99% of current Republican politicians believe in voodoo economics.

Just for fun, here's what Nixon '72 vs Reagan '84 would look like (in terms of who got the higher percentage of the vote, if added together this would usually mean the total would be more than 100%..)

Nixon is in red.. lol..

Reagan, although I respect both men. Nixon's Watergate business makes me vote for Reagan, although I probably would have voted for Nixon if it never occurred.

Funny considering that so many people here HATE Reagan. I like him, personally, but not to the extent of thinking that he "won the cold war" or "defeated communism abroad.

However, to say that he was a non-factor in foreign affairs is moot.

Nixon's actions in Indochina and Reagan's likeability almost make me say Reagan, but I just can't...

Oh Christ. Probably  Reagan, because as corrupt as his administration was, his corruption didn't leave a permanent black mark on the Presidency like Nixon's putrid time in office did.
