Hubert Humphrey, Henry Clay, Mo Udall, Paul Simon, Robert Kennedy and Adlai Stevenson were all missed oppertunities for this country.

Barry Goldwater, Henry M Jackson, George Romney, Robert Taft (too bad we had the Cold War and WWII, or he would have been great), Bob Dole, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, Jerry Brown, John Connally (despite the fact that he moved us away from the Gold Standard), Al Smith, Robert F Kennedy. There are probably more.

He was a Democrat that switched parties because of FDR's hostility to business. He and Landon couldn't really make distinguishable differences between themselves and the Democrats.
