What if something happened to Kerry?
«
on:

I was just wondering what would happen if something major happened to Kerry so that the Democrats couldnt nominate him. Something like death, or his wife getting murderedm or a huge scandal. I know this is a big hypothetical, just wondering though

That's what Carl Rove calls a contingency plan.

my guess is it would be an 'open convention'.
what if the president elect dies before inaguration day? does the vice president elect become president?

Maybe the DNC will reschedule some primaries for May, June and July and candidates will step in. The DNC can set the rules.

I could be wrong on this one but I believe if a candidate dies or becomes unable to serve then by party rules the delegates are not bound and may give their vote to whomever they choose.

It really depends on when it would happen though. But it would throw the whole thing into a state of confusion.
If there were still primaries left then Edwards, Dean, Clark, & company could hit the campaign trail again.
On short notice I suspect the only person who Democrats could easily agree on would be Al Gore.

Hmm... good idea
If that were the case, the Democrats wouldn't have a chance... their chances are already not in their favor, I can't see how they could still win if something that traumatic happened.

I wouldn't say that John Edwards is 'so liberal'. It's true that he probably wouldn't win his home state, but he wouldn't necessarily have to.

What would be the point of having him on the ticket to sway the south if he couldnt even sway his home state to him.

The point isn't really to sway the South, it's to sway moderate Republicans and independents who have voted for him in large numbers in primaries all over the country.

Edwards is dead in the water. Kerry says behind closed doors he is a political lightweight. If Democrats want to win they need to start running more Conservative Democrats.

So you get to hear what is said behind closed doors? We really must start lining them with lead and send you kryptonite in the mail.

Ok, I was just joking around. You don't have to take it so personally.
However, I have yet to hear Kerry say that about Edwards. In fact this is the first time I've heard anyone say that. Could you provide a source to back up that claim?

It's going to be eighty-one degrees today, so I rode the bicycle in. Lovin' it now. Wait till July!
That picture gives me a raging hard-on. Well, not the picture, exactly, but the doom it portends. I only thought it was going go way negative when I thought it would be a Kerry/vanillaDemocrat ticket. Now that I fantasize about the possibility of a Kerry/Dean ticket...

Rush said it yesterday and he said it came from sources in the Kerry campaign.

Well Rush isn't really the most independent of sources, now is he? Frankly Rush has made a lot of statements that have proven to be untrue.
Let's put it this way ... if I were to say that Al Franken said that Bush called Bill Frist a "political lightweight" and that he said it came from sources in the Bush campaign ... would you believe it?
