The Republicans have gone after Obama, but the Bush administration had hundreds of terror trials in civilian court, so why didn't the Republicans go after the Bush administration?  If there are any Repubs here who oppose civilian court trials on the forum, why oppose it now if you didn't before?

The Republicans are going after Obama because he is a Democrat, and is therefore evil.  They don't care that Bush did the exact same thing; they're gonna attack the Democrat.

This, pretty much. That's also why they supported Bush's idea to expand Medicare but opposed Obama's idea to drop the Medicare age.

Not only Republicans, but Dick Cheney, who's administration supported a civilian court trial for the shoe-bomber.

I am more concerned about draining terrorists of information we can get using legal methods of "persuasion" before they are dumped into the legal system. After that, I suspect any reasoned cost benefit analysis would suggest that civilian courts rather than military tribunals are preferable, if only for our image abroad. If because of security considerations, not all evidence can be adduced to convict the perp, well then send the perp back from whence the perp came. They will deal with it.

The law is not a suicide pact, but there is no reason to twist the law in a dumb manner, if it can be done without dramatically increasing the odds of something catastrophic happening.

He's a Democrat, therefore every decision he makes on national security is weak somehow. It sucks...

Yeah, Toriester, good point, even if a jury finds him innocent, it's not like the idiot will ever be able to get onto a plane again and I doubt he ever possessed enough braincells to plan anything brilliant

OK, I realize why they're doing it - the question was more to engage some of my GOP friends in a debate on the issue.

Well McConnell now believes the Bush administration made a mistake doing that. Interesting, however, that he never mentioned that while Bush was in office.
