1980's.

He was corrupt, but he served his country well in Vietnam.

Others served better and got less, including one of the neighboring Democratic congressmen, Don Bailey.
Which year?

So I will expect the same respect to be paid, by the Left, to Oliver North when he dies.

I have problems with Oliver North, but I do respect his military record (which was a bit more "heroic" than Murtha's).  Murtha was a staff intelligence officer; North commanded a platoon in the field.

I won't be sweeping the bad stuff under the rug or trying to make out his military record as more heroic than it was.

Al Gore had not invented the Internet yet.  You will have to try books.  It shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Sorry, but B-I-H.  He is what's wrong with America.  And sadly he is quite typical of the Democrat Party as a whole.

It's Democratic Party, not "Democrat Party."

He never claimed to have Invented the Internet. What a huge piece of conservative and Republican propaganda.

True.

I don't have the time to go to Pennsylvania and search through the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette archives to find out, so I guess this one will remain a mystery.

Murtha was a truly awful congressman.  While I'm not terribly sad to see him go, I do wish his loved ones well.

I'm disgusted by the hatred shown towards Murtha in this thread.

Rest in Peace Mr. Murtha. I admire your service to this country and your public stand against the Iraq War.

To an earlier question, Bugsy Rendell has to order a special election and give 60 days notice.  If he does it during the May primaries he'll save money for the state, but he said he hasn't decided (like we have money to burn) Roll Eyes

This is a man that "served" a very poor part of the country... but really only served himself.

You know, I've been pretty damn critical of Murtha in life, but this is the first I heard that he didn't direct tons of money to his district in a way that provided a living for thousands of people, directly or indirectly. Yes, he wasted some of that money, and yes, he was corrupt--but it's even more than that to claim he didn't at least run a massive welfare operation for a dying city. I've read newspaper articles about all the businesses in Johnstown that flourished because he channeled federal money through the place. Again, there's plenty to criticize about that, but it wasn't like all the money stopped with him as it does with many Republican and Democratic legislators who have shifted similar funds purely to defense contractors.

Remembering my brief time in the software sector (specifically, a supplier to government and defense contractors): If you wanted to do business with Johnstown, you had to do business through John Murtha.

Not that he wasn't a good pimp or anything. All his bitches had mink coats.

How long can Rendell legally stall giving notice of the election? I am sure that the Dems will find this election an annoyance and an inconvenience. Who gave Murtha permission to die at this most inconvenient time?  What an incorrigible bastard he was!

Torie, our primary is May 18, so clearly he has the leeway to let it go until March 16 or so.......but I don't know the statute well.

I get ripped for being an ass, but within 24 hours pundits are already worried about PA-12 falling to a Republican?

Save your criticisms.

Are you getting sensitive in your old age Grumps?   By the way, it must be awful living in a state where pot is not effectively legal. Anyway, that might help you some. Tongue
